Just a heads up for those of us that drive hundreds of miles to get there.

I talked to the Game Shack today and they tell me that Area 4 will be closed starting tomorrow. The area may be open again on Saturday. All other Areas should be open for hunting. Supposed to rain, too.

I'll be in camp by Friday. Silver Dodge Caravan. May the pig gods smile on all of you.

any special reason given ?? not that it matters.....

That happened to me in February, Area 4 was shut down for 3 or 4 days. I didn't ask why. There was probably some training evolution going on at NorthStar.

Cheers,

Carl

Do you camp at the famcamp on base or in the primitive camp off base in Area 4?

Just got back from Vberg recon. Really just a side trip to some personal medical business in L.A. Stayed Thursday and Friday night in the "primitive" camp on Grant Road. Thursday night we were by ourselves. Friday night the Boy Scout Camporee with 300 invited guests started showing up. Saturday noon the Guard landed a Huey in the campground. Very cool. We were just leaving anyway.
There was a sign "Hunting closed until further notice" hung over the guardrail on San Antonio Rd. at Highway 1. It was still posted on Saturday even though the Game Warden said that they would open Area 4 on Saturday. I talked to the MPs on patrol and they could not do anything about the sign and said stay out. I couldn't find anyone at the Game Shack in the morning either.
Scouted Area 3 and parts of 2A. Hunted Shuman Creek Friday night. Sounded like someone had dogs in there. Probably the Casmalia locals. Beautiful big moon provided plenty of light for the walk back to the van at night. Hunted by Titan Gate Saturday morning. No sign of the wily porkers. Loads of fun, as usual. Got a photo of the largest bobcat I have ever seen. Everything is still green with water holes still prevalent. We say a very slight sprinkle of rain on Saturday. Packed up and left camp by noon.
Hope to get back there in May. Good luck to all you pig chasers.

get off the roads and walk. what will you be hunting with rifel? everyone that hunts on base is pretty shy if you know what I mean, I would be too though wouldn't want it to become like Ligget. you will probably see more game in your one weekend there then you would in a deer season you won't be disappointed. just don't break any rules or they will castrate you.

Barka Slough has a number of pigs. Unfortunately, it is closed until June 30th.

I took my very first pig out of the field west of the firing range. It is shotgun area and the trick is to avoid the poison oak and to find a way across the creek. (In the dark, of course.)

I'm going down to Vberg next week. Staying in the campground on Grant Rd.

Good luck hunting.

you may want to call before you go. There's a missle shot scheduled for the 20th. It was supposed to happen last week and they kept postponing it. We got there friday and there was no hunting. Then as we were packing up to leave saturday morning, they changed it to the 20th and opened it up. Also, there were 2 scout troops in the campground at Grant Rd. Pretty crowded. The lady I talked to that runs that campground said there were gonna be scout troops there every weekend this month and part of June. I can email ya the phone # if ya want. We were the only tent campers in the Fam Camp on base all weekend. Saw 1 pig in area 3 near A-Frame, but wasn't sure of my shot , so I didn't take it. Tried to get a little closer, but he disappeared somehow. Good luck this weekend, but definately call the gamewarden to check on that missle shot before you leave.
Oh yeah, and watch them rattlesnakes too. We ran across 3 this weekend.

Is there any way of scoring a map or two before we go? Also, does anyone have any thoughts or comments about hunting the rifle only versus shotgun/archery only areas? Thanks!

If I may ask....

1) where is Barka Slough ??

2) A-Frame in area 3 ??

Good Info for putting onto a cell phone:
VAFB DFG office: 805-606-6804
VAFB Law Enforcement: 805-606-3911
-- When the DFG office isn't open, call the LE desk. They will contact the game wardens. For instance, when you're trying to get your paperwork on a Sunday afternoon.
-- or when you're bringing in a pig after DFG office hours. I got sorta-chastised by the game warden when I got my pig last month, I should have called 'em as soon as the pig was killed that afternoon. The warden had to drive back in from home; otherwise could have stayed in the office and waited for me. Lesson Learned.

Cheers,

Carl

p.s. rattlesnakes ??
