I've gone to Arizona three times trying to find javelina during the January archery-only hunt. So far I haven't seen any of the little rascals.
Does anyone have any words of wisdom for what area I should put in for? I'd like to avoid the southern areas as I'll likely be by myself and I'd just as soon not run into any illegals crossing the border.

Thanks, Guy

I've hunted 36A. 36B. And 36C. Seen pigs in all of them. High point and glass glass glass!

Good luck Grey Taylor, javalina with a trad bow sounds highly challenging for sure it will be close encounters with those jaw popping stinkies. Wish I could help u, all I know is my wife's grandmother lives in A.Z. and I hear they hang out on the golf courses.......tra

Actually just returned from Hualapai Reservation this morning and boy did we get into the javelina- big time.
Took my brother with me- it was his first time javelina hunting and my first time calling. And the hunting gods shinned on us.
Not ten minutes out we spot a group of approximately 15 animals. We moved to within 75 feet of them at which point I get my little brother set and started calling. So many came in (two stopped and were less than 5 feet from him) and so fast (3 literally ran past him within 10 feet) that he about shit himself and then missed three shots. He is normally a very solid shooter but it really freaked him out! It made for a great laugh and believe it or not the day got better!
Weather was perfect- mid eighties.
My past experience is that they usually start moving a little later but with the mild days they are moving fairly early- not deer early but be looking by 6:30-7:00... Between 1-3 in the afternoon look for them to be coming out of the culverts and drainage ditches... In the evening find some water.

Get a call- I practiced for about five minutes after listening to someone call on you tube.

Calling those buggers in is some of the very best fun I have ever had with my clothes on.

Thanks for the suggestions, gentlemen.
These little guys are frustrating because they seem to like hanging out in urban areas where I'd just as soon not hunt. A friend who lived in Flagstaff had them in his backyard.

signguy,
I'm heading to AZ hopefully late November to visit my dad, I'm gonna try the Hualapai as well, anything special I need to know about getting the permit or is it just show up, pay and hunt? It's only 45 miles from my dad.

Mel,
You can just walk into the office in Peach Springs. They will have everything you need there. Just take your ID and payment. They have a free map also, but it's not much help. Best of luck!

What sorta cost will be involved? Is their good public camping or camping of the grid on forest service lands.

Regarding the Hualapai resv. I believe its open all year long for Javelina, not state season, you show up and buy a permit. The permit is good for 30 days from date of purchase. I'm not sure if you can camp or not, but i'm sure theres something close. Im going to try it this year with rifle, but next year with bow.

Here's an email I received from them.

Hello, The number to the Hualapai Game and Fish Department is 928-769-2227. The Director is Scott Crozier. The Secretary is Sharon Wilder You do not need an AZ hunting license to hunt on the Reservation. But you do need a Hualapai Hunting Tag to hunt Javelina. They are 30 day permits. Call or email me if there are further questions. Annette Bravo, Program Manager Hualapai Department of Natural Resources Wildlife, Fisheries, and Parks Program P.O. Box 300/947 Rodeo Way Peach Springs, AZ 86434 928-769-2255 fax: 928-769-2309 cell: 602-509-0924

Sorry, didn't mean to highjack your thread.

No interest in a high jack so tell me to piss off if you want :)

As said, tags are just show up between 8-5. Bring cash or a check.
Lots of camping but I stayed at the hotel on the reservation and would again.
$90.00 a night for big rooms and includes breakfast. Not fancy but more than adequate and clean!
They don't have any beer/wine/booze :(
Hotel is just across the street from game and fish where you pick up your tags.

I suggest you show up with all of your drinks, snacks etc. and a full tank of diesel/gas. There is a store to get anything forgotten but it is small- Ice is available at the store or hotel.
We did lunch in the bush each day and ate breakfast and dinner at the hotel. Price was very reasonable (I think it was $20.00 for dinner for two) and the food was good- not fancy but good.

The people are all great and the experience was fabulous. I have spent a lot more for a lot less- I thought overall this was an inexpensive way to hunt for a few days.
The country could not be any prettier- This is a place I will go back to for the foreseeable future.

Oh- any there are a lot of animals!!!

I suggest archery for sure if you shoot a bow- However, excellent place and game animal for iron sites on an AR platform or the trusty 30/30...
Brush is heavy but very navigable. Figure a 15 minute run to the hunting grounds from the hotel- which then extend out as far as the grand canyon.

This is a place everyone should hit at least once- it is a gem for the long weekend type of deal.

I've done well in 20B near Wickenburg . The key are good optics and a pad to sit on.
