Hey all,
I am new to this site as of yesterday but figured I would jump in with both feet. Heading to AZ tomorrow for four days of scouting before my Bull Elk Hunt. I was finally drawn (6A muzzie) and am stoked to get out there. I just returned from my rifle hunt for deer in 5A, 5BN/S. Saw deer but nothing to shoot. Was almost run over by a 5X5 bull elk while I was in in 5BS. Most amzing thing I have ever encountered. This bull came up to within 3 feet of me and never saw me. He hung around for 30 seconds or so milling around and couldn't figure out what I was. Two or three times during the encounter I could have touched his legs he was so close. I realized at that point that this was a bit dangerous. If he had bolted or kicked I could have had some serious issues. He walked away from me a bit and I moved so he would see me and hit the road. Awesome deal. 5 minutes after the bull had split the area, 6 cows came up the same trail. I moved before they got too close so that they would notice me. Didn't want to go through another 60 seconds of wondering if I would get stomped into the ground or not. Never got a picture of the bull but did get this shot of the cows. It was a great trip and awesome hunt even though i did not close the deal.
I did close this year on a 4X5 mulie in Utah which put meet in the freezer. We had an excellent hunt.
I have hunted 6A before with my dad but always for Cow elk. Looking to do a full 4 days of scouting this week in 6A starting Monday.
Good Luck to everyone that is headed out.
