Unit 9 ARCHERY bull is always my first choice. I've never drawn that tag. It's my understanding that the rifle hunt in 9 is not that good because many have migrated down into unit 10.

By mid Nov,You will have snow for THE hunt,so it will be easy to tell where THEY been and are --- Don't overlook the transition country on the East side that leads down to Antelope country !!! Good Luck/Good Tag ---

Unit 9 November can be a very hard hunt depending on what you are looking for! Water is crutial even in November! You are not going to see 30 to 50 bulls as you would in October. If it is a dry summer, the bulls can be 30 to 40 inches smaller than a good year with water. Have realistic goals! I hope that you glass off a tripod, 15 or larger binos would be best on a good year. Setting water on a dry year would be good but you will have to compete against the other 299 tag holders. One advantage is to cut them off before the water and the other 299 tag holders waiting at the water. Man I could go on forever. Another thing to think about is lodging. There is a motel at the junction of 180 and the flintstones that is reasonable. Tusayan at the south rim is outragous! You would be better off tenting it small and being mobil. Hope this helps, Feel free to e-mail me if you have questions, and good luck on your hunt!

That time of year you will see most of the Bulls south and east of Red Butte. Get into the junipers and glass from a high knoll. Look under the trees. They will learn real quick to water at night. If you are not going to camp then stay in Valle; as it is much cheaper than Tusayan.

Hate to hijack the topic, but speaking of Unit 9 has anyone hunted deer in this unit? Let me know if it's worth applying for, whether for muleys or whitetail.

Thanks,

Have hunted only elk in this unit, but have seen many good muley bucks. As a matter of fact I saw a couple of 26 to 28 inch bucks this past year locked up in a horn to fight that was pretty awesome.

AZ Jim:

If I draw a Unit 9 deer tag, we'll need to talk.

Just returned

thanks for all your great tips on thefall hunt. My brother needs all the help we can get for this one. I'm still trying for my archery tag for 8,9,10 with 5 years

planning on looking area over on the way back after kaibab archery deer hunt in sept. Maybe hear them bugling and see what the potential is. we've got spotting scopes and the best binocs to scout but they say its pretty thick forest .
Hope to get more rain but its supposed to be another dry year in the southwest.

like the idea of cutting them (hunters and elk) off at the pass but the thought of gobs of rifle hunters circling a pond waiting for the sun to come up is spooky at best.

we like remote spots with little or no flashlights ahead of us on the trail but i'm sure it will be alittle crowded. At least, when the gun goes off-we'll know somethings on the move!

how large is the little town of Valle? motels, dennys, ?

we'll check on the deer in september and let you know but, of course, everything changes in november.

May do the over counter bull hunt third season in colorado?
thanks again

I killed a 6 on thanksgiving morning on the rim in '05. There were elk throughout the unit. You must scout to find out which tanks have water and which are dry. No snow in '05.
