the bad news: where are the pigs ??

I've seen and heard lots of coyotes..... had one in the crosshairs at 258 yards, and another in the crosshairs at 164 yards.

I've NOT seen or heard pig(s) !!! bigdaddyk, what's up with that ??

sheesh.... maybe I'm just one of those guys who's gonna be a vegetarian all his life.

Cheers,

What area's did you hunt? A few of us are going up there the 18th - 21st. We usually hunt 2A, 3, and 4. I hear by the golf course is good too, but never go there.

wandered around Area 4 the first 2-1/2 days .... no luck, and the area is closed for 3 days (9 - 11 FEB).

been wandering around Area 3 .... no luck.

don't know about the golf course, that's bow & shotgun only as I understand it.

I gotta tell ya again, the weather is absolutely fabulous. Nothing like sitting on a grassy Area 3 hillside and doing some glassing, soaking up the 70+ deg temps, bright cloudless skies, awesome ocean view..... and sitting back and falling asleep.
-- and then running back to the Burger King for some quick grub.
-- then hittin' the 'net in the library for a few minutes.....

Never had it so good on active duty, this retired life is for me !!

Cheers,

Carl

back from VAFB..... was there from Sunday morning (the 6th) through Thursday evening the 10th.

Areas 3 and 4: saw no pigs, heard no pigs......

another session of "armed camping" while enjoying some gorgeous SoCal weather.....

did see a mess of coyotes though: had a bedded coyote in my crosshairs at 258 yards, and another in my crosshairs at 163 yards..... the game warden had said not to bother the coyotes.

Cheers,

Carl

I believe that in some other topics on this forums menu(I think in varmint hunting), some lady mentioned that she & her husband who are fond of quail huntng do not view coyote hunting as "ok". It is probably because the coyote in pictures looks rather like the neighborhood collie dog & evokes "pet" compassion.
That game warden probably does not hunt coyotes & feels the same misguided "pet" compassion as that lady hunter & her husband. It was also brought up in another thread that many new hired game wardens now are college graduates who DO NOT hunt. It is a crying shame. That explains some of their "strange" views on hunting certain species. 'Nuff said. larrysogla.

Or it could be that Vandenberg is a military installation and the base CO said no varmint shooting. He can do that. He IS the Commanding Officer. Piss him off and he can say no hunting at all. He also doesn't allow handguns on his installation. I guess it's good to be king. For the most part though, I don't have any problems adhering to the base rules. It's like a private hunting club for active duty and military retirees.

I hunted Vandenberg last weekend. Hunted areas 2a and 4 between 4 of us for notta. On the coyote side of things however, the game warden who gave us our tresspassing pass also gave us a letter to shoot coyotes. He said you are not allowed to hunt coyotes but we want you to shoot them. Strange but he actually gave us a letter explaining it to us. He also said if you do shoot them that we were required to bring them back to the check station and were not allowed to keep any part of the yote. He said they are doing some tests and want to take blood etc... Could have shot a few but we passed holding out for a pig.

Carl, I am sorry to hear that you did not see any hogs. I have to tell you that this time last year myself and mathews were knee deep in the hogs. I gave you all of the info. I know that they are still there. Man, it would be nice to get one last hunt on that great base. I more than likely never be able to hunt them hogs again. Carl, give me a call so that we can discuss your hunt. I can put you on them hogs. Withoout a dought.

Hank
