I shed hunt in a variety of different terrains such as brushy creekbottoms,woods,grown-up fields, hay fields to even orchards.I've almost stepped on sheds before seeing them and have spotted them over 100 yds away.I've even spotted a few while driving down the road, but my average distance at finding sheds is probably 10-15 yds away.
What's your average distance at spotting them??
BTW-my sheds on the average are far from record class animals,on a occasion I do find some bragging size sheds.

I have to say that most of mine are spotted a little further. I find most of mine on field edges so I'm able to spot them sooner. Usually from 15 to 25 yds. I did however actually trip on 2 of them last year in tall grass.

This year's deer sheds were right in front of me before I could see them. Our ground cover was heavy with oak leaves and stickes from tree limbs. I suppose I walked very near some and missed seeing them.

The elk sheds were a different story. On the hillside were we find them, we can glass the tips sticking up from a 100 yds. away. The Tule Elk drop in the middle of February and the grass is not tall.

I'm gonna say that it's usually somewhere between 5 and 15 yards away for me. This season it's so far been on the short end of that. Our cover is too thick and opportunities for finding them in fields are uncommon. I get such a rush out of spotting a fresh shed and it takes a while for it to wear off, then I'm craving the next one.
