The heat must be getting to some of the poor souls in Arizona.

Man wants state to pay for cat killed by coyote

Associated Press, June 20, 2001 10:12:00

TUCSON - Jake the cat lost his life tangling with a coyote near his southern Arizona home. Now his owner wants the Arizona Game and Fish Department to compensate him.

Jake's owner, Wallace Burford, is seeking $328.21, the amount it cost him to cremate Jake.

Burford said the department should either post signs warning people about roaming wildlife, feed the animals so they're not hungry enough to seek out pets, or reimburse people whose pets are killed.

"They are responsible for all the wild game, but they don't seem to think so," said Burford, 75, whose cat was killed three days after Burford moved to Marana, just north of Tucson, from Lynchburg, Va.

Burford said he will make his case in Phoenix on Friday at a public meeting of the Game and Fish Commission after appealing an earlier decision not to pay him.

"I feel very sorry that he lost his pet, because I know how attached you get to a pet, and to have them killed is terrible," said Gerry Perry, regional supervisor for Game and Fish in Tucson. "But it seems in this day and age, people are always looking for someone that is responsible when stuff like this happens."

Perry said no one has ever requested compensation for a pet killed by wild animals in his 10 years with the department.

"We're talking about wild animals here," Perry said. "They're wild, and the courts have long held that no agency is responsible for acts of wildlife."

Burford doesn't plan to take his appeal past Friday, but he wants to start a campaign so newcomers whose pets are killed are compensated through money from hunting and fishing licenses.

Burford's new cat, Blacky, stays indoors.

Cremate a cat? What a waste of money! He shoulda just threw it in a trash can. He should have to compensate the State for poisoning a coyote with cat meat. Cats kill too many wild birds and should be illegal to own. Gee i wonder if I dont like cats.         Fubar

I'm pretty much right there with you on this one, Fubar.

If you don't want your danged animals eaten by wildlife, keep them out of the wild.  And yes, the backyard in coyote and lion country IS the wild.

Domestic cats shouldn't be allowed to roam loose anyway, with the exception of barn cats, perhaps.

Ditto the posts above about cats. I'm not a big fan of them, or often their owners for that matter.

That this one got munched is kinda ironic. Two thoughts come to mind. Live by the sword..., and turnabout is fair play.

Where I live I often come across wild cats. Farmers keep them in their barns, and then they wander, or city folks bring them to the country and let them go just to be rid of them.

If I'm on a deer stand and one prowls by, its bye bye tabby.

Cheers!

Yeah I agree with you guys about cats and this guy sounds like a dork.  But we must put a stop to the elderly being taken advantage of !!!

UNBELIEVABLE!  Another example of trying to pin the blame on someone else.  Does this guy honestly believe that the DFG could have saved his precious little kitty?  First, it was his own darn fault for moving to an area that, god-forbid, had wild animals roaming around.  And second, why was he letting his cat roam free anyway.  Maybe we should bring up a lawsuit against him for all the quail eggs and babies his cat probably munched on.

Cremate a cat?!?!  Are you sure this didn't happen in our lovely yuppie state of CA?!?!

Thank God the podunk stopped in AZ and didn't cross over into California - he just might win his case with all of the "animals are better than humans" pissants in our state. Once saw a cat hit by my buddies truck on the way to the Dove opener - the front tire sent it spinning out of control.  Centifugal force stretched the cat into a three-foot cyclone of fur!

I think they should pay half considering they banned trapping in the land of AZ.
