Night Predatory Hunting Proposal Terminated

5/25/02

Arizona Game and Fish

TUCSON – A proposal for establishing a night predator hunting, shotgun shooting shot season for predatory and furbearing mammals was terminated by the Arizona Game and Fish Commission May 18.

The original proposal to create such a season came from the Yuma Rod and Gun Club during public hunt meetings to give the Game and Fish Department another tool for managing predators, especially during pronghorn antelope fawning periods. Yuma Rod and Gun Club representatives on Saturday supported the Game and Fish Department in its recommendation that the commission terminate the proposal.

The proposal was originally brought before the Game and Fish Commission at its December 2001 meeting. The commission directed the department to draft a proposed plan for a comprehensive internal and public review process on the issue of nighttime predator calling and hunting. Based on the internal review, and public comments received, the department recommended terminating the proposal. The commission concurred.
