I just put in for AZ Archery Bull Elk for the first time.  Wondering what you guys think about my picks.   Did I do good?  Is there a local expert out there somewheres?

6a north
6a south
6b
5b south
5b north (grapevine)

6A&6b are my back yard and 5b isn't far away.  That being said I don't personally hunt any of those units for elk.  I do spend a fair amount of time in them though.  If you happen to draw look me up.

Welcome !

6A & 5A are great choices ! I have spent alot of time in both of those units & some in 6B. You should have no problem finding elk in those units. As a matter of fact 6A was my first choice. Good luck on the draw!!

I applied for 3A/3C early rifle bull ( I have 6 points) and 4A muzzleloader! I'm not too optomistic thou, my odds of my first choice are .007%. hehe

And hunting trophy bulls won't be too spetacular this year unless we get rain, and fast!

One Track,

Those are all good choices , but you have to remember one thing. Only 10% of the Bull tags in those areas will be issued to Non-Residents.  I have been hunting 6A south since 1994 and have harvested some nice animals out of there. Until you start to accumulate some bonus points , it will be purely a miracle to get drawn in one of those areas for Bull. I have also put in for 6A South but for Cow. My brother who is from Cali is also on my application and would have greatly reduced my chance of being drawn if I had put in for Bull. He has no bonus points or a hunter education permanent point. I would suggest to up your luck next year get a Arizona Hunter Ed Course in, and get the permanent Bonus Point!! And if your heart is not set on a Bull tag and you want to go Elk Hunting and learn a new area , try Cow next year. You stand a much greater chance of getting drawn.. Good Luck,

WW

Widgn: Thanks.  Good to know those are good units. I understand that my chance are slim to none. I think I will stick it out for Bull.  Do you know if I can take the Hunter Ed. class online, or by mail?

One Track,

You will have to attend it in person. If you already have a California Hunter Ed. Certificate , you can put in for the 12hr Arizona Class. They have tem here in Yuma on Saturdays. You will need to call Bill Larson , at AZ Fish & Game or e-mail him and he can let you know when the next class will be. You will have to provide him with a copy of your Cali H.E. cert in order to attend the class. And I believe the cost is $10.00. Here is his info:

Bill Larson
(602) 789-3241 or (602) 789-3903
2221 W. Greenway Rd. Phoenix , AZ. 85023
e-mail: blarson@gf.state.az.us

Thanks!  Will do.  What's the temp today in Yuma? I have friends with houses at Fishers and Martinez. Spend time at the river, and out in the field for dove season.  Love it down there. Wondering if you do any deer hunting out of Yuma, or along the river.

WW:

Are you bowhunting out of Yuma in the dessert? Or, are you going out of town?  Kaibab, etc?  Just curious.  I once saw a huge dessert muley on the riverroad north of Martinez while riding a quad at night.  He was a monster, 28" - 30" spread.  So, I have always been intriqued with that area.  I actually shot my first and only duck on the river right below the Imperial dam.  Sounds like you make the most out of living in Yuma.

I hate tell you this, but Unit 3 just about burnt up. 120,000 acres and growing. The prediction is 2 more weeks before they can contain it. It will probably end up at over 200,000 acres!  In 5-7 years that place will be Elk paradise, but for now it looks pretty bleak. Better pray for the muzzleloader tag!
