TEJON RANCH TO TEMPORARILY SUSPEND NORMAL HUNTING OPERATIONS
Program to be re-evaluated following Tejon Ranch/ Department of Fish and Game investigation into the unauthorized take of mountain lions

TEJON RANCH, CA
[FONT=Times New Roman,Times New Roman][FONT=Times New Roman,Times New Roman]January 20, 2012) Tejon Ranch Company announced today that effective January 30, 2012, it will voluntarily suspend all normal hunting operations on the Ranch, revoke all unsupervised access permits, and refund all monies paid to date for hunting access on the Ranch after the January 30, 2012, suspension date. The suspension, though temporary and voluntary, will last as long as is needed to conduct a thorough evaluation of the Ranch’s hunting and access programs and make whatever operational changes are deemed necessary.

[FONT=Times New Roman,Times New Roman][FONT=Times New Roman,Times New Roman]The Company is taking the action in light of the results of a year-long investigation into allegations that mountain lions were taken on Ranch property without depredation permits as required by California law.
Once it was informed that lions may have been taken illegally on the Ranch, the Company immediately began an investigation into those claims and turned over the results of its investigation to the Department of Fish and Game (DFG). The Company and its executive management team provided its full cooperation throughout the official investigation. The investigation determined that over the last 20 years, since the passage of Proposition 117 in 1990, which introduced new restrictions and regulations regarding the take of mountain lions in California, there had been incidents where mountain lions were taken on the Ranch without prior authorization.

The investigation further determined that those unauthorized actions were neither approved nor encouraged by the Company and, in fact, were never reported to the Company’s executive management, or to the DFG, in clear violation of Company policy and the state statute regulating the take of mountain lions in California.

"I was appalled and outraged when I learned the results of the investigation," said Robert A. Stine, president and CEO of Tejon Ranch Company. "Tejon Ranch did not then, and certainly does not now condone such activity, and we sincerely regret that such activity took place on our Ranch. Accordingly, we are taking every step necessary to ensure it won’t happen again. Tejon Ranch is committed to the responsible stewardship of its land, including the wildlife that inhabits the Ranch. Tejon Ranch has a long history of such stewardship, including its voluntary ban on the use of lead ammunition on the Ranch and other actions taken to assist in the recovery of the endangered California condor."

The suspension of normal hunting activities and subsequent review is being undertaken with the cooperation of the DFG. Experts from Fish and Game and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service agree that it is in the long term best interests of conservation for responsible hunting to continue on Tejon Ranch, given that it is important to maintain a proper balance of wildlife in a given habitat; and on-going hunting is a critical component in maintaining that balance. Tejon Ranch Company will work closely with the DFG in examining every aspect of the Ranch’s hunting program. The Ranch’s goal will be to institute best hunting management standards and practices, including a full examination of whether allowing unsupervised access to the Company’s 422 square miles of Ranch property may have contributed to this unfortunate series of events.

"While it’s in the long term best interests of conservation for hunting to continue on the Ranch," said Stine, "we believe a short-term suspension of our normal operations are necessary to determine the best way to operate the hunting program to ensure that these actions never again occur on Tejon Ranch, even if that means severely restricting hunting access to the Ranch."
The results of both the DFG’s and the Company’s investigation were forwarded to the Kern County District Attorney’s office, which will determine what, if any, potential legal action will be taken. Tejon Ranch Company is cooperating fully with the District Attorney’s office in this matter.

Participants in Tejon Ranch’s hunting and access programs should soon receive instructions outlining the procedure for obtaining a refund of their unused portion of their hunting and/or access membership. Any questions regarding this suspension and the refund of fees should be directed to Tejon Ranch’s Wildlife Management Division at (661) 663-4210.

Well I have been a member on the Ranch for many years, and even thought this will put a damper on my quick hunts .
I can see where this was bound to happen (for many reasons) , and will view it as a good thing for for (many more reasons.)

What's good about this.....I'm lucky enough to have probably the last hunt this year on the ranch or until further notice coming up next weekend...but I was really looking forward to an amazing spring up at the ranch....I am sure glad Bron who I defended somewhat on this in the beginning has started this. Who knows if all he said is true or not but I have spent more weekends and days up a the ranch than most of us on here and I have only seen 3 big cats total....north or south side.so all this talk about 600 lions give me a break. No chance. Thanks Bron....maybe they will still let us go nature walking up there.....then get eaten by a large cat since there is so many of them...man this really pisses me off.

this is all bad... Aren't the allegations that lions were taken by ranch employees? So how is restricting public hunting addressing that?

Well, ya know, someone has to "pay" for this and they'd have to have an expensive trial(s) to punish the guide(s) that supposedly did this dirty deed. Now, just close the hunting and you punish those hundreds of hunters that used to hunt Tejon without any trial or anything messy like that. Never mind that the average joe blow that hunts Tejon had absolutely nothing to do with these (alleged) violations.

I was just filling out my app to go the first weekend of march. Was going to mail it off on Monday. I hope this gets fixed and still allows the DIY hunts.

This is from the web site, so hopefully it is just a couple of months

Effective January 30, 2012, Tejon Ranch will temporarily suspend hunting operations and will not be accepting new applications for membership. We anticipate that operations will resume in a couple of months. If you have any questions or desire additional information, please email huntinfo@tejonranch.com.

A sad day for Tejon Ranch. I am not looking forward to find another place to hunt hogs. I have hunted tejon ranch since the beginning of the pig o rama. I think it has been at least 10 years or so. I just don't under stand why are they closing the ranch to hunting. This has nothing to do with us hunters. Let Fish and Game do there investigation and then let them fine who ever is at fault. Way do you need the Da involved in this, what a joke. Well my buddy and I are looking for another place to hunt hogs out there. Any suggestion on a good ranch with a reasonable price like Tejon ranch.

LA Times article from today on the hunting suspension at Tejon

http://www.latimes.com/news/local/la-me-tejon-hunting-20120121,0,7251505.story

Yowser, the quote from Sanders about what Don told him at the end of that LA Times article. Gonna be interesting to see if any charges stick on anyone.

No word I've seen on what the settlement was with the fired guide Sanders. Anyone? Non disclosure signed?

Say we get back in to hunt in the fall and you have to shoot a cat in self defense, you think you'll get a fair shake from Tejon? DFG? I had that one cat follow me out of a wallow one night that one of the hunter's in our group got on his game camera.

Where are all the SSS advocates? They are usually all over these threads, only practicing the SS though.

Recently an avacado ranch super got a year probation, 1K fine and lost his rifle for shooting 2 lions near Fallbrook CA in a plea agreement.

Too bad. The closure was coming sooner or later. It's the "politically correct" thing to do as far as the ranch bosses are concerned. It cools down the publicity, makes the ranch look like it's doing something and gets all those "nasty" hunters off of the property for a while. The good part is that Tejon recognizes the huge amount of money it gets from its hunting program. This almost guarantees that the ranch will reopen to hunting in the future.

I find Bron's last statement in the article very telling. From the LA Times, "Sanders said: 'We got two to three mountain lions with that one permit.'" Who is "we"? Was he forced to shoot more lions? If so, how was he forced? If he did shoot more lions illegally, is he going to be prosecuted? No one else has been implicated and/or linked to any physical evidence except for Sanders. Did he go rogue? Hmmmm......

What I may do for my family are very different than what I will do on public lands or for my company. These idiots may have taken a stupid misdemeanor through conspiracy to a possible felony. It will be interesting to see the charges.

And damm them for ruining my spring hunt plans

Good News/Bad News Dept: "Tejon Ranch spokesman Barry Zoeller said: 'We expect to resume hunting operations in time for the fall hunting season, but with more restrictions and fewer hunters.'" (http://www.latimes.com/news/local/la-me-tejon-hunting-20120121,0,7251505.story)

Shame that an (alleged) systematic policy of mountain lion poaching by the folks who ran the joint will lead to more restrictions on us. We've been in Area 8 for close to a decade and even on Season Openers, we never see a volume of hunters that seems anywhere near excessive. In fact, we're always amazed how wonderfully remote and quiet it is. Something for which we've been truly grateful...

Wonder how this will affect pricing, as well. Spring access, before it was revoked, went up 40% for this year without the benefit of any additional services or activities being offered.

Guess that might be a champagne problem, if we don't get drawn when the new system is in place.
