A gun shop in town is under new ownership, and I asked the new owner if he would be selling black guns now. He told me that the DOJ is about to start cracking down somehow on the bullet button conversions and other modifications to AR/AK types, and that they would start confiscating weapons from shops inthe near future. I don't know if they are going to change the wording of the law, or if it is just an empty threat, but they convinced him not to jump on the band wagon. He had every intention of doing so when he bought the business too. They scared him enough to not even try selling them and that is a lot of money not being made. He told me that they were real specific on detatchable magazines, that if the mag can be removed in any way it will be considered a detachable mag, and illegal. Buy em now boys before it's too late.

DOJ cannot change the wording of the law, and the law specifically allows "bullet buttons". I heard a similar story a year ago from an FFL friend of mine. AFAIK, nothing happened. This is standard DOJ FUD and here is why I think so.

It would be precipitous for DOJ to take action against the sale of a lawful product. The DOJ has kept a low profile since Jerry Brown became AG. Why would the DOJ precipitate anything now, after nearly two years of looking the other way?

We're on the eve of a Supreme Court ruling on McDonald. Jerry Brown supports 2nd ammendment incorporation. Much better for the DOJ to wait for the dust to settle on this ruling, or for a new AG, whichever comes first.

If that wasn't enough, Jerry Brown is not inclined to rile any segment of CA voters with the election for Governor coming up. The apple doesnt fall far from the tree and Brown Sr. was a believer that to win the governor's seat, you have to leave guns alone in this state.

Build one.

I have built several for under $1000 total including shipping, taxes, parts, etc.

For a real nice rifle with quality parts you can get it in your safe for under $1500

If you had a clue what you were talking about you wouldn't have said that......

Try working at a gun store and see the level of paperwork and crap you have to deal with; the over the top rudeness of DOJ and BATFE and you would relish a nice quiet job like crash test dummy or something equally rewarding.

We don't sell AR type stuff, and we don't sell lowers. A customer can order one and have it shipped to us, but that's all we'll do, 'cause we can't suffer the liability if the state comes after us.

Yeah 410 is right on. Gun stores have so much BS they have to deal with, its some times amazing that they still are still able to do business. I have a good friend who co owns a store and some times I feel like he's ready to call it quits.

Of Mice and Men

No doubt about it, the CA DOJ is a major PITA however, the initial post reads:

I don't know if they are going to change the wording of the law, or if it is just an empty threat, but they convinced him not to jump on the band wagon.

My comment is directed to the initial post and my position is simply this. There is no evidence that such a "threat" is actually going to take place and even if it were, there'd be plenty of notice, legal challenges from the NRA, Calguns guys and others. bending over in the face of an undocumented and unsupported empty threat is weak. Gun retailers need to be gun advocates and not timid, easily intimidated mice.

Sure Bruce but if you just put a good chunk of your savings into buying a new business and the DOJ says they are going to shut you down take away your inventory and possibly your business many would make the same decision. Essentially what your saying if a bully beats up a little kid it’s the little kids fault for not fighting back. Yes it would be great if the shop owner looked into the law and challenged it but at the end of the day he is trying to run his business and may not have the time or means to fight. I am not advocating passive behavior here but not every David is willing to take on Goliath.

Regarding your original post: I say it's YOUR responsibility to serve notice to your representatives at the state and federal level that you won't tolerate this nonsense! DOJ is just doing what it's always done, and treats gun store owners like they were child molesters. If you have ever been exposed to two overweight, middle-aged, PMS'd BATFE employees, in your store using the "V" word followed by the "R" word, you'd have SOME idea of the problems faced by the store owner. So, step right up pal, and help your gun store out instead of bagging on him!

For those who don't know: V is for violation and R is for Revocation. Both pretty bad news to a gun store owner. Particularly when it's for putting "SB" in the county-you-live-in block instead of "Santa Barbara". Hmmm......pretty serious felonious activity there, eh? True story.

I've got 3 lowers on the way. Figure they will be the hardest parts to get in the future.
