Baiting Hogs

im out here in texas and have a property that holds hogs although i cant seem to get on them. i have been putting out corn wit sour dairy milk with no luck. i am hunting over a pond seeing as its the only water on the place and its been pretty warm. am i doing something wrong?? any tips??

ya i am from california also i am just out here doing some work till the 12th. wish i was in cali a friend of my got depredation permits from a landowner and smoked a 327 pound hog at 15 yards!!!!!!!!!!!!!

We have had some success with creamed corn. I've owned a pot belly for a month before, the little bastard loved the stuff. So I thought I would try it out of state. Saw a big old boar on the can within 30 min. Didn't shoot though.

Tried the dairy milk, seemed that when it coagulated it seeled off the top and didn't smell too much.

Hunting over bait or feeders isn't my brew of beer, but to each his own. Hope this helps.

hmm im just tryin to figure not so much what to bait them with but what should i do to try and get on them???

How long have you been doing your baiting, maybe they just haven't found it yet? On my place I have 4 feeders that sling corn twice a day, year round. I get lots of hog pictures with my game cameras, most of them are at night, but every so often I do get daytime pics. Have you tried hunting them at night?

Some of the more popular tricks some of my Texas buddies use would include...
1. Mix corn with beer and let it ferment in a bucket for a few days before you dish it out.
2. Pour diesel or used motor oil on a fence post and plant it in a likely spot
3. Pour Cool Aid powder on a stump or on sweet cob.
4. Purchase sow scent and a wick system.

I personally would do as Gus suggests and give it a bit more time.

Out here in CA it is illegal to "bait" any game animals, but all ranchers plant barley or oats for their livestock and it is a magnet for the pigs...

This is the recipie we use around east texas where im from.

1- 5 gal bucket
1- 50#lbs corn
5-dry packages of strawberry koolaid
1- gal diesel (the stuff you put in your truck not the whiskey)
add all ingredients to bucket and fill rest of the way with water.
put it in the sun and let soak for at least 1 week.
you will have to add a little water from time to time.

put it where ever you are baiting and it will work.

that is the recipie i use for baiting my traps and it works for me

or buy a nightvision scope and do it at night or a spotlight with a red lens

Yes it is legal to hunt hog at night here. We have had better luck using a red lense on our light, it seems as if they spook near as much as just blasting them with a white light. Good luck, hope you get a few hogs before you have to leave.

hmm mayb ill try it one night before i leave. it sucks i went out tonight the rain had just stopped. never even saw a fresh hog track!!!!! saw a nice 10 pointer and a lil 4 pointer but no damn pigs!!!!!

Yeah now that diesel is 5 bucks a gal i would cut that back to 1/2 gal. corn around my parts is now at 12.99 a bag

due to the prices of both i havent been trapping any latley

Itdan,pigs love creosote and disiel to rub for lice or ticks.But the main reason is coons won't eat as much and deer don't like what it does to their Turboooooooo.......Upper

It normally keeps the deer out of the trap. I have never seen one in a trap but my buddys have. they say it is quite a show getting them out.

Update the price of corn is falling around here now it is 10.10 per bag and is going to be 9.50 on the next shipment

I'm guessing here but... Doesn't it take awhile for pigs and/or deer to "discover" bait?

If you see the C'mere deer ads you'd think that you pour the stuff out and have to stand back from the rush of animals. I don't believe that's the case, but I don't know.

Another ?, with the bait for the trap, do you leave it in the bucket or spread on the bottom of the trap?

Pigs have great sniffers. Around my parts they normally find it the first night.

Yes you spread the bait out in the trap.
