I'd just use the Mosin at first if it can hold a few inch group at 100 yds, while the lead free ammo is pricey, I'ts not like you will be sending hundreds of rounds down range, just practice with the mil-surp and sight in with the lead free. should be fine for a couple of guided (i.e. short hikes) hunts.

then since you will probably going to do some deer hunting eventually, I'd just get a used or basic bolt action (used, savage, marlin, etc...tikka if you can swing it) in a common caliber, 270/308/30-06 something along those lines that you can find affordable copper ammo for.

better to spend on the guide fees, vacation time off, good boots, and good bino's

there's nothing wrong with a 336 for close work or if you a good shot or scope it. i retired mine after the lead ban, but tons of guys take bears with them.

Still doing my research. I took a hog hunting course at bass pro shop in Rancho Cuchamonga a few weeks ago, and there was a lot of good info. Basically I am finding that shooting accurately with whatever you have, and getting the range time in is the most important thing regardless of caliber. Still have not found any great rifle deals yet. Like you said Westcoastr, there is alot of other equipment, guide fees that I need to consider. This is an expensive hobby for a guy with a couple kids and a wife. Anyway, I took my mosin out for the first time. It actually had pretty decent groupings at 100 yards. It needs some sight adjustment and more practice. I bought a bunch of military surplus for practice, and I was pleased to find out the local ranges don't like jacketed mil surp ammo. So I am going to get some practice in and see what happens. All of your responses have been very helpful and I continue reading, researching every day. Maybe some day I will actually do some hunting.
