Okay,
So we've all bashed on methods of take, places not to hunt, ethics, etc.....

In your humble opinion, Where is the best place to hunt hogs?

AND

Is it Public or Private?

AND

What makes it so great?

***PLEASE DO NOT DISPUTE POSTINGS. THIS IS A FACT SHARING THREAD ONLY***

I'll be the first.

Private Ranches of Parkfield/San Miguel.

Quiet beautiful Country, Lots of Hogs, And having the Ranch to yourself makes it a little safer.

I haven't had a whole bunch of private property opportunities, but of those I have had, I'd rate Tejon Ranch one of the best ever.

I think MikenSoCo's spot over in Sonoma County was pretty awesome too, especially for it's small size. Unfortunately, looks like that opportunity no longer exists.

Chopper's place is incredible. It wouldn't appeal to everyone, though, because it's archery only.

As far as public land, I really enjoy the country around Laguna Mountain/Clear Creek area. I have yet to get a shot there, but there are hogs and the country is beautiful!

The only private property I've hunted that has had abundant pigs have been Choppers place and Tejon Ranch. Archery and Rifle. If you could hunt Choppers with any method of take, it would be hands down the best place I've hunted. (Damn you careless rifle hunters who have crossed Chopper

May a thousand crows fly over your teepee.) Although, it's nice to have an archery only locale.

Public, Camp Roberts for consistency, Fort Hunter Liggett for abundance of all types of wildlife (including game) and habitat.

Well, I've arrowed a lot of hogs over the years and bowhunted Tejon Ranch BEFORE they offered the POR's. Also hunted some private ranches up north that were fairly good. But if I had to say where is "pig heaven", it would have to be Santa Cruz Island. Unreal amount of hogs and no pressure. When they ran hunts there, it was a great place to hunt. I only get over there on a limited basis now to conduct work, but when I'm allowed to hunt it's awesome!

The best place to hunt for me is a place that barely anyone knows about, and I hope it stays that way.

I don't have alot of experience trying to find pigs on public land. Only did it once and probably would only do it again with either SHOT's private hot spot or somebody that knows the area is holding pigs. I went guided once up in King City at Don Ingalls Ranch but have since found that I enjoy the challenge of finding them myself. The extra excersize is always good right before river season and bathing suits get put on. So all that said I must go with Tejon Ranch for several reasons. The ranch is huge!
<
It's private so you don't have to worry about finding any diapers full of two month year old scat.
<
Everybody I have found is allways curtious and helpfull if you find anyone at all. And most of all the pigs are there along with Elk, bobcat, mountain lion, deer, squirels, badger, condors, eagles, bears, and you can't forget the yote's. The scenery is beautiful and you never get the feeling that your going to be hasseled. It is also a great place to teach the kids and fine tune their outdoor skills.

I had access to a ranch for a while up in NorCal west of Maxwell that was pretty darned good. Not much pressure and lots of pigs--there's bound to be better places though.

Norcalihunter,
Then here's a thought, Tell a Truth and share.

I really don't think half of the guys are lying. It's been my experience that most hunters are pretty honest people with strong morals.

So,...Give it up !

Private property seems to be more productive, in early May (Next couple of weeks) the farmers plant beans. The hogs come down to the fields during the hours of darkness. Just before darkness you can find them in the surrounding area. They especially like the bean plants when the sprout is just poking out of the ground. I beleive they are feeding on the planted seed underground. A group of pigs can destroy an entire field in a matter of days. Some years ago I can recall seeing as many as 40-50 hogs coming from all directions, recently I only see groups of about 6. One of the farmers happens to be a long time family friend who allows me to hunt his property.

As far as public land I would vote for Fort Hunter Liggett. Although I have never harvested any hogs there myself I have been along with others that have taken hogs. I have also seen hogs in the cleaning stations while deer hunting.

For years, we had a lease arangement on a ranch near Parkfield, on Turkey Flat Road. We could take 2 hogs each (more for a little more money each), leave our trailers there, shoot all the varmints we wanted and all the legal dove and quail we could hit. That was just about paradise. Barley fields in the front part of the ranch, hills and valleys in the "back country" part of the ranch. Tons of hogs and ground squirrels. We left ATVs there, and could come up with just a phone call to let them know we were coming. Our kids grew up camping and shooting there.

Then Bub (the rancher) found out he had an anuerism (sp?). He couldn't shoot, ride a horse or go 4-wheeling. He died shortly thereafter. His wife was unable to keep up the place, so she sold off all but about 700 acres of the ranch. (She got a bunch of money for it, at least!) Now she is leery about letting anyone hunt there, as she is worried about getting sued. Plus, she just got re-married. I haven't been up there for a couple of years. I will have to call one of these days and see if I can come visit and camp for a weekend, just for the memories.
