I've found this guys opinions very valuble. He's very knowledgable and reviews pretty much everything. Even the major optics manufacturers listen to his recommendations. I've learned alot from his site, I hope you can too.

He says the best binos full-size and mid-size are the Nikon Venture LX, 8x42 and 8x32 models. The best spotting scope is the Swarovski ATS 65HD. I wish I won the lottery, these optics are very pricey! I Know I won't be owning any of them anytime soon, lol.

Yeah, I found that site a little over a year ago and bought a huge Pentax 80mm 20x60 Spotting scope based on his reviews -- I didn't mind going heavy, large, and pricey because I also take pictures through it by setting my SLR camera right against it using a 2nd tripod. He does tend to favor the medium power binocs (8X), largely due to his birding hobby. He is also very good at pointing out the best buys for your money -- but still lot's of money as you noticed! If I was still young and starting out on gear, I would buy only one cheapo binocular and then save money for one of the quality binocs he reviews and recommends. With the number of cheapo and mid-priced binocs I bought over the last 30 years I could have done better by buying quality and then trading up every now and then.
