I would like to do my first Pig hunt this year or early next year.  I hear that if you are hunting a meat pig that it can be better quality meat in the spring when the pigs are on different feed?  Does anyone have any thoughts on this?

Thanks.

I've hunted them at various times of the year and my personal opinion is that they are the best eating in the late spring when they've been dining on barley for awhile.  That's just my opinion, though.

Hi ghrousseau - I don't know if there is such a thing as a meat pig, because they all have that same taste? I think the guides coined that term as an excuse for their client harvesting a small sow. Here in California I have found that "Boar" hunting is best after the first of the year, that is, after the usual short sunny period after the holidays. When the storms hit again during the middle of January the hogs on public land are on the move, and there is a good chance to catch one during day light hours.

it depends on the area you are hunting.. if you are shooting off of the dry land farming in the central coast (barley, wheat) i would say from end of april to august.. these pigs will be literally full of grain and excellent table fare... if they are feeding off of acorns fall is better...
the real answer to your question is any pig you can shoot... 90% of the pigs i have shot have been excellent and the other 10 % has been very good... it is great eating most of the year.. my favorite is ribs, i smoke the straps into canadian bacon, smoke the hams or make sausage out of them and every thing left make sausage or stir fry..
you can t go wrong..
