Big Bass Bonanza
Tim Renken, St. Louis Post-Dispatch

In big-time bass fishing tournaments, rules are carefully drawn to keep competitors from winning on a fluke.
That's why major tournaments, such as those on the BASS or FLW tours, are fished over three days, with the top prizes given for total catch rather than the biggest bass.
Then there's the Big Bass Bonanza on June 27-28 on the Arkansas River. Now in its fourth year, this tournament is designed to appeal to amateurs. One fish, a fluke or not, wins the $100,000 top prize. Last year some 2,500 people from 18 states fished in the tourney, which benefits Arkansas Children's Hospital. The winning fish, caught by a guy who had never fished in a tournament before, weighed 6.21 pounds.
Dozens of prizes with a total value of $270,000 will be awarded. Fishing will be on some 300 miles of the Arkansas River.
The entry fee is $90 for one day, $180 for two. To register or get more information call 501-376-6517 or see http://www.fordbigbass.com
