Went out for an evening hunt on the south side of the ranch to see if I could arrow a hog. I have always seen hogs in this one area so I decided to watch it until the sun went down. As I walked up the ridge the sun was just casting its shadows on the other side of the hills so I knew soon the hogs would be moving. This area has lots of beds, trails, and fresh sign everywhere. As I glassed the hillside I saw six hogs running down the hill like little kids playing. They ran straight down into the canyon so I didn't know if they kept going or were going to come my way like they have in the past. Well five minutes had gone by and here they came. So I headed up my side of the hill to get in behind them because the wind was blowing straight up the canyon. As I came in behind them they just kept feeding along like little lawn mowers. So as I started to catch up to them I came through some sagebrush that were bedding areas and trails leading out to the feeding areas. Well as I came to the end of the sagebrush they were coming into the sagebrush. I knelt down and started to think what the to do. There was one tree branch between the hogs and I, and the only shot would be straight on, not what I wanted. They caught my movement and turned around as I tried to draw back. Well I took up after them again and played cat and mouse with them up and down the mountain. It was getting late and I had to make my move. I ran up the hill and around to the side to cut them off and it worked. As I crawled up the hillside a big ole sow was presenting herself. Due to the steepness of the shot I held the 20 pin on her and let it go. The arrow disappeared a little farther back than I wanted. She ran and stopped a little farther, I sent another one, it hit low. She ran a little ways again. So I shot again hitting her low in the leg and going threw the bottom of the brisket due to the steep angle. This time she ran behind a huge log. So I headed down a trail to where she was hiding. As she came out I put the fourty yard pin on her and put it threw the boiler room. She took off like a bad out of hll, and I was know out of arrows. So I went back and found three out of the four arrows and all had blood on them. By know it is dark and a long ways from the truck and I got only on little blood spot about the size of a dime by the log. I decide to make my way around the area she ran off into but really planned on coming back in the morning but I had found piled up in some rocks and she was a toad. The pack out was a good one but got her to the road and in the bed of the truck by 9:30. At the butcher skinned and dressed she weighed over 100lbs. Thats a big girl. Not bad for my first hog with a bow, it was quite exciting can't wait to get on one like those big ole boys hatchet kills.
