I am interested in doing a local pig hunt at Big Horn. This would be my first pig hunt and doing it with archery equipment.

Anyone here ever hunted there? If so, care to give opinions

thanks

Do a search on Big Horn Ranch and you will find plenty of information along with a few opinions. LOL!

There is a difference between hunting and shooting. The Big Horn Ranch is a great place to shoot animals. For some people, it's just the ticket. For others, it's not. Decide whether you want to hunt or shoot and then make your decision. As jkvshooter said, you'll find plenty of opinions on both sides of the fence. Just use the JHO search engine. I'm trying to be very tactful and diplomatic because if you take one side or the other in this issue, people tend to become rather contentious and some nasty postings fly back and forth.

Just to clarify and avoid misunderstanding, I am referring to the Big Horn Canyon Ranch in Southern California.

dairyhunter, I was just there in January. For your first time it may not be bad. Don't expect other pig hunting to be that easy though. It is a guaranteed hunt. Helen Keller could take a pig at Big Horn. I still had a great time though. It is what you make of it.

To each ther own I would not go there, but that does not mean you can't go there and have a good Shoot. I just think it is a matter of what you really want to get out of it, a hunt or shoot.

I did hear there pigs have rather large floppy ears

Id rather hunt 10 times and not be sucsessful than to just go shoot something but thats just me and my

Not choosing sides netiher but if you are a new hunter and are attracted to canned hunts then thats for you to decided. People shouldnt judges others so badly. Its there choice and since they are one pustting up the cash, I guess its know ones buisness but a opinion. As hunters regardles of what weapon we decide to use or what kind of hunt we choose. We should not be in this stupid mockery thing because people decide differently from the next mucho guy/hunter. We actually should accept that guys choice since he is not trying to take away our hunting rights like alot of anti are these days. I have been seeing alot of that kind of behavior these days. Like those idiots thats trying to ruin it for every one, who likes to hunt lake Sonoma. I hunt public land 100% and seem to be taking out more trash out the place evry time I hunt which really shouldn't be that way. Let unite as hunters ans stop the BS life is to short, HAVE FUN GO HUNT WHILE WE STILL HAVE THE PRIVLEGE TOO!!!!

CAhntr isn't too far from the mark with the Helen Keller remark, but this is a great place to take someone who is new to the hunting way of life.

Its an easy hunt in that you will most likely kill a pig, but the terrain is challenging, and its a great freindly atmosphere.

I got my wife introduced to hunting there last year, and besides a freezer full of pork, the greatest result is that she is asking for a realtree camo outfit this valentines day instead of chocolate or flowers. If we had taken four trips to public land over the course of a year and come up empty each time (another friend's pig hunting experience) I am pretty sure I'd be making another trek to the florist next week:)

Go for it!

This is a better start since using bow and arrow that would have low probablity of success in a public land hunt might get you frustrated and quit.

Post pictures and tell us the story about your experience.

Just avoid those pigs with curly tails and floppy ears. They have very low bragging value (LOL).

Not to throw rocks at the place but it is not for everybody. I went there many years ago and s many others have stated, will not go back. I did do the "hunt" with a bow also. Not to much of a challenge....a very captive audience. There are a few black hogs but many look like farm ****** put out to pasture. All in all, it will allow you to tune your archery skills on hogs. Once you go, post your feelings and results....good luck and happy hunting.

thanks for the replies, guys. My whole deal is that time is very limited and frankly, I would rather save my time off of work for deer and waterfowl hunting. But I would like to fill the freezer with some bacon and have a decent challenge with my bow.

some of the replies make it sound like you go sit in a blind located over a food plot. Is this generally how you hunt it? I would at least prefer to spot them from the ground and make a stalk.

There's no blinds or food plots, granted, because they're not needed! Just walk the road, and i'm sure you'll see them or hear them snoring under the bushes!!!

When I was there, as soon as I topped the hill, it was pretty much pick and choose. Many, if not most, were laying by the scattered water tubs. There are no blinds and the food plats are grain as such by the water places. I walked the entire place several times (not that big) and picked a target and put an end to the day. Got there about 6:00 a/m and was on my way home by 9:00, pig in my truck. There is a place in Perris, Smitty's I believe, that will do an excellent job on processing your hog. They are pretty close and do lots of them.

Good luck and fill us in with the results.
