Memorial Day at the lake got blown out by high winds and cold, so my wife and kids decided to head home on Sunday, giving me a chance to head to the ranch to see if the odd weather was making any critters move that evening. Got out around 6:30 and saw a lot of deer, including two does each with a pair of cute little speckled fawns. After walking the property for an hour or so I sat down on top of a hill overlooking the valley and waited as the sun set. As light was fading I saw a huge boar walking down the valley from the north, so I snuck down the hill and manuvered across a gully to where I could get a shot at him from another rise. As I come up over the rise and look into the valley where I expected to see him he's not there... but three nice bucks are! I look to the left and there he is, about 125 yards out and walking slowly away from me, grazing as he went. I sat down and got ready for him to turn, and when he did let him have it with my 270. I heard the bullet hit him solidly, but he didn't react except to start trotting back up the valley toward me. I shot again and again heard the bullet smack into him, but he kept on moving. He finally slowed to a walk a good 100 yards from where I'd first hit him and only 40 or so yards from me, so I dropped him with a third shot.
I made sure he was dead, then headed back get my quad. Light was fading fast and the quad's headlight wasn't working, and by the time I'd dragged him back toward the car it was almost totally dark. A search of my gear bag and I realized my headlamp was missing and all I had to work with were two of those tiny LED keyring flashlights, one of which required me to hold the button down to work. So I had to field dress him with a tiny light held in my teeth - not recommended!
He was a monster - 255 lbs on the hoof, good cutters, and a shield that was at least 1 1/2" thick, maybe more. One bullet had double-lunged him (second?), another a bit further back (luckily not gut shot), and the third in the neck. Only one had passed thru. One tough SOB.
I didn't want to deal with skinning him at that point so left him hanging for the night. This morning I realized I still didn't want to skin him and I sure don't need the meat of a big ol' boar (though surprisingly he didn't stink), so I called the local fire department asking if anyone wanted him. Sure enough, an off-duty fireman came out and got him, saving me a lot of work.
