Was cruising through the local Wal-Mart the other night when one to those motion sensor frogs started chirping at me. Has anyone tried to use a motion sensor from something like the frog or Billy Bass singing piece of junk?? I imagine the range on it wouldn't be great but what do I know.

The things don't actually sense "motion", so much as fairly rapid changes in visible light level. While in an indoor setting a fast light level change is almost always associated with motion, in an outdoor setting the thing would be goin' off every time a shadow passed over the sensor.

Cut one of the circuits open and you'll find a CDS photo-resistor as the sensor element (sometimes a photo-transistor).

A PIR motion detector senses moving objects that have a surface temperature that is different - above or below - the ambient (background) temp.

Besides, the flapping tail and stupid song would surely scare the deer away!
