Binocs with eyeglasses

I have a buddy that wears eyeglasses that says he cant use binoculars. Says he cant focus them very well and the field of view gets cut down. He says when he uses them he has to pull his eyeglasses off and it takes his eyes a little bit to adjust to where he can see through them and then it takes his eyes time to adjust back when he puts his glasses back on and just basically says they arent worth the trouble for him. Now ive never heard of people complaining of binocs that wear glasses. Are theses just drawbacks that are custom to eyeglass wearers or does the higher quality glass really make alot of diffrence here? He has a pair of Leupold wind river 10x32 compacts. Now i know there not the best glass out there but i have a pair also and there pretty decent for the price. Anyone have any input on this?

The feild of veiw gets smaller because his eyes are farther fron the binos than say someone without glasses,i have prescription glasses and i cannot use my Binos with them on,even with the rubber cups folded back,so i dont wear my glasses,but then i can still see fairly well without them,just old age catching up to me.

I'm in the mid fifties age and in the trifocal eyeglass era now. But for the last 15 years or so, I've never been able to use any optics, other than a rifle or pistol scope, with my glasses on. Scopes have significant eye relief and are adjustable for focus on the eyepiece. Binocs and spotting scopes are made to have the eye very close to the eyepiece. So I just use a lanyard type string for my glasses, and drop them down to my chest when I use the binocs/spotter. It's very slow and cumbersome, but so is old age anyway. No matter what kind of fold-down eyecups, the field is just cut down way to much on binocs to keep my glasses on. Yeah, it takes a few nanoseconds for my eyes to readjust with each change, but I haven't found any other realistic solution.

I understand your friend's problem with glasses and binocs. As the other guys said, he's not alone. I found the Minolta Compact II line works for me. They have a 10X and an 8X, I think I paid about $100 for the 8X. No more tunnel vision, I can keep the glasses on and have the full field of view. They're basically old ladies bird watching binos but they're small, light, and have the extended eye relief that I wanted. You can spend lots more and probably get more, but these are working for me. I wear glasses too and could never use my binos without sliding my glasses to the top of my head. 2 years ago i bought a pair of 8x42 Bushnell Legends and they work great. They have twist up eyecaps for people without glasses, so if you have glasses, you just don't twist the cups up. I don't have any complaints with them.

Guess I"m swimming upstream, but I'm satisfied with using the fold down rubber cups. I focus the binoc to zero prescription and accept the smaller field of view. Then I'm immediately full vision capable as I lower the binocs. In either case you have to give up something to get the other. different strokes/folks........

I have heard that if you can get a pair of binoculars that has about 20mm of eye relief then you should be able to use most of the field of view with glasses on. Most of the time this amount of eye relief only exists in the full size 8x and 10x glasses with about a 5mm exit pupil.

I recently bought a pair of Pentax PCF WP 10x50 binocs and they work very well with my glasses. The have a lot of eye relief (I think more than 20mm), and the eye cups can be pushed in for glasses, or extended out for use without glasses. They are very clear and bright, and are truely waterproof.

I bought them new on ebay for about $125 shipped, so it's tough to beat the price. The only downside is that they are fairly big and heavy, but overall I highly recommend them, and I'm probalby going to buy another pair for the fahter-in-law.

I too have always had problems with using my glasses with binoculars. I finally found a couple of brands that work for me.

The Leica's and the Minox both work well for me.

My suggestion is to go to a WELL stocked store, one that carries several different brands and try them out. You should find a pair that will work w/ your glasses as well as let you see those monsters you've been missing!

Oneshot, I just bought the new Bushnell 8x42 Legends (roofs,with pc-3 phase coating) last hunting season.

I wear glasses and find the twist up eye cups are awesome. Lots of eye relief when down, no problems with or without glasses. Mid Oct. I switch to contact lenses for the rest of the season.

The 8x42 Legends are awesome optics for the price!

I wear glasses and have had lots of troubles. Not getting afull field of view really bugs me. I CANNOT STAND to take off my glasses. For a long time I to said that they were not worth the trouble for me. I started looking at optics again and bought a Leupold gold spotting scope,AWSOME eye relief, but they are not binocs. Most binocs advertise 18-22mm of eye relief for eyeglass wearers. Most do not have enought eye relief for me, look at the Pentax they have 22mm , I believe my spotting scope has 27mm and it is wonderful. I also started figuring out another problem I have had for a long time. I get blurry vision after looking throught the rifle scope or spotter for only a few minutes. GGVG turned me onto keeping both eyes open while shooting or viewing, it takes some practice but has worked for me so far.

For what it is worth I just got back from the store and checked out the bushnell legends and baush and lomb discoverer. Very impressed with the usage with my glasses on. Are the Nikons better? These were the first bino's that I could look through with my glasses on and actually see.

I bought a good pair of Redfields that have long eye relief. The work good as far as seeing but the rubber eventually smudges my eye glass lenses, just like even the most expensive pair.

Any of the cheap binos, just won't work well, even with the cups rolled down.

I have a pair of Leopold Wind River Cascades. They work just fine when I'm wearing my eyeglasses.
