I have an old set of Leupold WindRiver binos and they are a drag. they are 10x32 and aren't very clear. I am looking at getting the Monarchs in either 10x or 12x. I used the 12x a friend of mine has and they where great for judging bucks at a distance I didn't get a wobbly image that people complain about and the image was super crisp. I was wondering what your opinion might be and why. Thanks for the input. =)

The glassing for deer class I took with AZ Guide Duwane Adams showed my 10x40 leupold if binocs weren't adequate as I couldn't find the coues deer out 1 1/2 miles so Duwane let me use his 15x56 Zeiss binocs then I could see the deer. 12x are good ,to steady your glassing get a packable tripod eliminates the respiration movement we all have.I bought Pentax 20x60 binocs & a tripod.

Really depends on what you will be using this glass for. If you are just wantin glass for around your neck and glassin from time to time I'd go with the 10x42...steadier for hand holding and plenty of power. Now if you're going to sit for extened periods and really pick apart the landscape like scr83jp was taught by Duwane Adams then the 12x or better yet the 15x would be the ticket...though both would not be as steady hand held as the 10x and you would benefit greatly with the use of a tripod. For all around hunting applications I personally believe the 10x is the best choice.

Depends on what you will be using them for. I agree with Deerslam for general use and carrying 10x42 are good.

Remember at the same objective size the loss in light for a 12x will be more than a 10x and way more than an 8x. I personally have found a 10x42 to be a good balance between the two.

I had a pair of Bausch and Lomb 7x42 that you could see in the dark with but the magnification was hard to judge bucks with, although they were great for spotting deer it wasn't enough to judge mass with from far away.

I am now using 10x42 Kahles and like them a lot. If I need to see farther I pop out the spotter

I bought my pops a set of the monarch 10x42s for his retirement and they are great for the money.

Good Luck

I've got a set of Leupold Wind River binos in 10X42 and I like them very much. They've got that long eye relief so I can glass all day with them wearing my bifocals. They are pretty compact and I wear them comfortably on a harness where they hang in front of my chest and are quickly accessible.
