my Brother in law drew 3rd season Cow. I was very excited for the chance to tag along and expierence the hunt. we both have never killed a elk. the 1st two hrs were slow not much sign and no elk. we did see 3 bucks though. we moved areas and saw a single set of tracks crossing the road that look very fresh. i started folowing and soon found pee and scat. I told him it's most likely a bull but lets try. 5 mins later in a thick river bottom we stepped on a Bull mayeb 20 yrds away. on our way back I glassed up 6 elk about 2 miles a way. we hiked about a mile 1 1/2 untill I could see it was 5 bulls and one cow.

we closed the distance had to cross a canal :( put on a super fun stock got with in 150yrds to find out the cow was a bull with just brow tines. I assume they were broke off fighting. every bull was busted most only had one side left. later on I glassed up a HUGE perfect 6x6 :not-worthy: with 21 cows. he was awsome. the ground was so flat just sage maybe 2' high we could not get a shot with in 700 yrds so we let them move on. we then caught back up and made I think 5 more stalks but could never get better then 500 yrds. he wanted 200 or less. the last stalk we walked in 7in of water for a quater mile :rotflmao:. buy now it's 1pm. we had been on the herd for 4 hrs. we decided to break for lunch. and catch back up later. we were out of water and starvin. on our way back we learn his daughter had a flat and did not have the special lug key and was stranded. she was 5 miles from us. we decided to hike the 3 miles to my truck.

a mile later I look up and the herd is 200 yrds off the road. some are bedded some are up. the 6x6 is up. we sit down and rest and decided to see if they will all lay down. 10 mins later there all bedded. we army crawed for ever to get close. I would peek up and could only see his rack. I felt like i was in a huntin show. he felt we were still to far. we were maybe 400 out so he crawled in the brush even further. I stayed back and gave hand signals. they ended up getting up. one cow had him pegged it was like she ran over and told the herd. those damn guys are back!!! lol that was her mistake. he got on his knees and dropped her where she stood. a hunt I will never ever forget. I really underestamated this. we earned her big time. I think we put in 10 miles. so much fun!!

Congrats. i've always said I thought cows were harder to hunt, many more eyes looking around.
