A friend recently told me that there are A LOT of wild boar in the Laguna Mtns. of San Diego county.  Can anyone confirm this or if there are any in Southern California?

Thanks,

East Coast, there are no wild pigs in San Diego County that I know of.  Possibly, the Laguna Mountains the person was refering to were in Northern California.  I have heard reference to wild pigs in the Laguna Mountains somewhere in Northern California.

The closest place I know of to hunt pigs in Southern California is Big Horn Range (I think that is the name) in Riverside/San Bernardino.   I have heard that it is mostly or all archery and that many of the animals are tame.

I have never hunted it, though.

There is lots of good hunting on private land up North in the Coalinga area.

I know someone who hunts that ranch. It is in Cherry Valley, The pigs are tame.. Also it cost $25 to hunt. $250. if you get a pig. I don't know if those prices still hold..

I've hunted big horn ranch.  Actually I should correct myself and say I have shot at big horn ranch.  Most of the pigs there are "river" pigs brought in from a farm.  The pigs basically just lie there and look at you,  in our case follow you around.  I just could not shoot a tame pig.  However, right before leaving I took this 350 lb sow at 400yards across the valley.  It did not have any tusks(river pig) but it was very good eating.  They do have goats and rams up there though.  It's just not my definition of hunting.  But if you want pork thats the place to go.

If I'm not mistaken, I thought I read somewhere that there are pigs near Silverwood Lake in San Bernardino County.  I can't recall where and when I read this.

Can anybody confirm this?

Four were taken about 10 months ago. I have been up kicking around that area a few times since and haven't seen any sign. Haven't heard of any taken since that initial report.         Scott

I've also looked for those pigs since reading about it last spring in Calif. Hog Hunter.  I have only found old sign (tracks and rooting), but nothing fresh.  I talked with a ranger/fireman at the station across from the lake entrance (I think it's Cottonwood Station).  He says he's been looking for them also, but has never seen any.  He also said that he has never talked to anyone who actually saw them, but that people have found some sign. He says DFG told him it was probably a small pod of 4-8 pigs that worked their way up from the Majove Narrows herd.  He said that he wouldn't be supprised if they had been shot out or the few that were left were taken by mountain lions.
He did say that most of the game animals (deer, bear, etc) have moved into the Miller's canyon area, because all the creeks on the south side of the lake are now dry.  Even the creeks (Houston & West Mojave) in Millers canyon are dry, so the animals have to go to the lake to water.

Being in San Diego, I got all excited when I saw the title of this post.  Sigh, a nice dream though.  I too used to be confused about the 2 Lagunas - one in central california, one in San Diego county.  One with pigs, one without.  RATS!

Being new to the sport of pig hunting, I'd like to learn more about the Mojave Narrows herd mentioned by Bishop.  I live close to Los Angeles and MN is very close-by.

Thank You for your help.

Regrettfully, Mojave Narrows is a county park, so no hunting.  The rumor is that they got there from a hunt club that was once in Oro Grande.  I'm not familiar with that area, so I don't know if there would be any pigs on public land around there.  Perhaps "Mojave" knows, since he lives in the high desert.

The Mojave River pigs wonder up into Deep Creek occassionally. Buddy shot one a few years ago.

I saw one several years ago while hunting near Devil's Hole on Deep Creek. I rubbed my eyes to make sure and yup, it was a pig.

Not really any herds to hunt in the Mojave river/Deep Creek, just one wandering up river once in a blue moon.
