Speck,

Thanks for the info...That's a major concern of mine when I backpack hunt and dont plan on returning for a few days. How far would you say the hike is? Are we talking 5 to 6 miles before you get into some good "Hog Country"? What about primative camping areas? Decent areas to shack up for the night?

Oh yeah! I really wish I had the time to camp up there this year. Good memories of that week. Once you start going there, it fast becomes a quest to out-smart the piggies.

I suggest bringing a container of Technu poison oak soap. Several of my worst ever cases came from that area. I saw more sign the few times I could get out there mid-week, or at least there were fewer people out then. I also remember seeing/hearing turkeys there in the spring.

The only actual pigs I saw there were a buitchered carcass, a road kill, and a half eatn pigklet som guys dog brought back to the parking area.

OK, I have heard it twice now about the "sweetwater side" from SPECK and BLASMASTER, just what are you guys talking about when you say that? I take it is a spring, and I have not been near far back enough to find it. Will I hit it by just following the creek back? and does it open up any the farther back you get? or is the terrain the same as when you go down the side of Laguna to the creek?

Ok, I'm ready for this trip. A few dates might work, hope it works with the rest of the crew. I'm so ready, I already packed my pack

OK, I can't speak for Spec, but:
The BLM map of Laguna Mtn area looks like a butterfly (see map). The right wing is the Laguna Mountain side, and the left wing is the Sweetwater Springs side. As you drive down Coalinga Rd. from Coalinga, the first entry is the big trail into Laguna Mtn., then there is a strech of private land, and then the first entry to the Sweetwater side, and a little further is the last entry into the Sweetwater Side. Inside the Sweetwater side, shortly after you follow the road in at the last entry, there is a land-locked piece of private land, and in there is the actual Sweetwater Spring. The small area was unfenced, but marked No Trespassing, when I first started going there. Now the small private island of land is fully fenced. The river is on the Laguna Mtn. side. I've been to both sides, and almost fell to my death once, crossing from the Sweetwater Side to the Laguna Mtn. side.

Best thing to do is order the map from BLM, and use it to mark boundaries on a topo map and an aerial photo.

Isn't it the same road?

Yeah I just checked the map. Los Gatos Rd. turns into Coalinga Rd., they're the same.

Just an important note... most of the body of that "Butterfly" is private land. It's not fenced, but it IS legally posted three signs to the mile. At least one of the landowners is known to prosecute. and to patrol.

If you see signs, don't cross over.

If you guys are (still) planning a backingpacking/hunting trip I'd be interested, if there's room for another. The way my buddies and I do it when we fish, is we hike in as far as we can on the first day, set up a base/spike camp and then hike even further (using day packs we packed inside our backpacks) the remianing day(s). Probably best to go when you have a long weekend. Just my
