I'm partial to PSE primarily for the price, and currently shoot a PSE Predator (similar to the Bruin). For the price listed, you might want to jump on that offer and save your money for all the extras you find yourself wanting and needing (arrows, broadheads, etc.).

The Hoyt Alpha-max is an impressive little number. I shoot an X-Force Dream Season and like it, but it's a twitchy bow to shoot well. I would opt for buying the bow and putting your own choices on it. That way you have the setup you want. My advice would be to get help from someone you know who is already knowledgeable before laying any money down. You will save $$ that way and start down the right road.

Bear archery is a quality choice... specially for the price. I shoot a Lights Out by Bear. Its more than any beginer would need. But after you get into it (and You will), You might find that you want to try other bows. I am either getting a mathews monster or Bear Attack shot both and kinda leaning towards the Bear honestly. Just go to your local archery shop and test fire a bunch!

To me it is like buying a new car. You can get the striped down model or the one with every bell and whistle known to man. Both are going to still get you from point a to point b. To me personally I would suggest going for a med price bow and get use to it and bowhunting. You can always upgrade but I wouldn't want to see anyone right now spend a lot of money on something they do not like and/or hardly use. Just my two cents

there is a brand new mission eliminator on bay area craigslist. he shot it very little. 50 times. all the accessories incl, for less than $400. great deal.

having said that..a great bow tech is worth his/her weight in gold, especially for a newbie. trust me on this. i just went thru new bow hell, and i have been around bows for 4 years.

RB, what is your draw length. and bow hunting hog is very difficult. i am still a cali hog virgin. even with this face!

Yeah, I just bought my first compound off craigslist this morning. I was surprised how many bows there were on there for sale. Now I'm looking for another recurve for bowfishing for my bro.

Everytime I've gotten a new bow it's been an upgrade from the previous. My last bow was a PSE Nova, and I thought it was great till I shot my buddy's DXT. It was so much better to shoot that I made up my mind right then and there to get one for myself. It was pricey, but I have no regrets.
It's short axle to axle, so a little squirrely, but I shoot it well enough. I like to shoot it too.
I dry fired it once last Spring, but I took it back to where I bought it and the guy replaced some dampeners that popped out, filed away a gouge on a wheel, restrung it, and I was good to go. He did it for free as well.
It got me a pig at Sonoma this year.
60 lb
3 pin G5 sight
Vortxx 5 arrow quiver
Ripcord drop away rest.

Ebay! Plenty of package deals under $300.00. I know about 6 guys (including myself) who have bought complete set ups on Ebay. Most packages come set up for the East coast (Wisker biscuits & 3 pin sights). Those are good to start with; you can think about changing the rests and sights later. Good luck. Here is just one example of what you can find http://cgi.ebay.com/Bear-Archery-El...tem&pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item3f0135cd70

Go to your local pro shop they can help you decide on a bow to fit your budget. Even if your not quiet sure on what you wanting. If its not an inconvenience and want the best customer service and will throw in 5 free lessons with a bow. Also if you belong to a local archery club you get 10 % off. Try Predators Archery and tell them Pat sent you.

Get a PSE. #1 in the business. I've taken probably 30 big game animals with my PSE's over the years and never been let down.

Who did you talk to at Archery Only? I've been going to them for years, even though its 2 hours away and I drive past 2 other shops on the way. Wayne the owner is a great guy. You must have caught someone on a bad day, even though thats no excuse for bad customer relations.

Got this little meat hog while scouting for bucks last weekend.
