This is exactly what I was talking about Metdawg... and it only gets worse!

Congrats are due, Georg. If there are anymore around your house, I may need a leg up on this bet. Birddawg lives in hog central. I live in the city. There's an old ElectraGlide around the corner that I could probably kill with an arrow...but other than that hog, it looks like my next archery hog hunt isn't 'til June.

Metdawg44,

Don't do it. When I mainly rifle hunted on a friends ranch we would go some time without seeing bucks before finally scoring. I decided to pick up archery equipment since you got to hunt more. Well, I started seeing a lot more game. Yup, anywhere from 50 yards and up. Two, three four, five bucks at a time. Gimme rifle shots. Didn't fling an arrow at one for too long to think about (I had a self imposed 30 yard rule). It was fun seeing game but frustrating not closing the deal. Plays with your mind. Be carefull, very carefull.

When I started bow hunting I went to Predator Archery as well. Those guys were very friendly and extremely helpful. They got me set up with the correct equipment within my budget. Gave me lessons and a bunch of sound advice. I recommend them to anybody just starting out.

Also there is a great archery range about 20-25 minutes away from the Predator shop on top of Mount Madonna. You can practice every type of shot you may encounter while hunting from any yardage you choose. The course winds through the beautiful coastal mountains, amongst redwood and hardwood trees. You can practice for hours and never shoot at the same target twice and it's free.

Here's a pic of a good friend of mine. I dont want to tell you his name because he found this poor buck on the side of the road and pulled out his bow and started taking pictures.....jeeesh...the things guys will do these days.

Yeah, another addiction.........well good addiction that is.....
I stumbled on Speckmisser's HOG BLOG by accident while searching on the internet and it is very good, inspired writing. Excellent writing talent we have in our very own Speckmisser of JHO fame. Speck, write a book and make gazillions and buy your own hog hunting ranch. I'll buy the first copy of the first printing. 'Nuff said.

There are three types of bowhunters, one version is the one that hunts with a bow to get out more, earlier, and maybe with a possibility of wanting to make things harder, though this version is usually still a rifle hunter and many times has the rifle in the truck, just in case. THis type also primarily puts in for rifle tags out of state, unless there are great odds of both drawing and being successful with a bow, otherwise they are wasting their time.

Then is the bowhunter that wants to move on to being a bow-only hunter, but isn't quite there, probably has a few kills under their belt, and is getting good with the bow, but still if they tell someone they are going hunting there is a good possibility that the rifle is there too. This version puts in for tags in bow only areas, but also plenty of rifle areas as well, if given the opportunity to hunt a good area with both they will start out the first few days with the bow but fall back on the rifle to finish the hunt.

THen you get the masochist, the guy that will still be chasing deer, elk, and bear with a bow during the general rifle season, with a general tag. He doesn't even realize that being within three hundred yards would result in kill if he had his rifle, hell the game doesn't really even get exciting till he gets within one hundred yards, and then only half way to anywhere near a consideration of an opportunity. This guy could tell you how many twists are in his string, and cable, can help a buddy sort out his "tuning" issues over the phone just because he has been there more often than he cares to remember. He sharpens broadheads and fletches arrows while watching bowhunting on television, finds himself with his hand behind his chin practicing his release when he is at the urinal, and knows that he will spend thirty times longer in the field than most rifle hunters, and thinks that is the best thing about being a bowhunter, he also refers to himself as a bowhunter, not just a hunter.

there is room for all kinds in bowhunting, come join us, spend some time learning what you know and don't know, then ask some more questions, spend at least ten times as long determining which bow is best for you as you would a truck, it is so much more important than that. The first few months, or year depending on how much you shoot, you will learn encyclopedias of info, soak it all in and just try and learn your bow as well as possible, never let a bow technician take your bow behind the counter without you going with him, for no other reason than to see what they are doing, and ask why, listen to other folks issues and try and learn from their mistakes, and lastly have fun, starting out no one is a bowhunter, you are a guy that walks in the woods with a bow, if you are used to hunting with a rifle I guarantee that one good bowseason will make you a ten times better rifle hunter than you are today, I know, I started out seventeen years ago as a rifle/shotgun hunter that liked being in the woods before most, back in Georgia, and grew to be the second type, now I am the archery geek third type that hasn't shot a rifle since I got out of the service, and have no plans to change that.

happy hunting

I second what the guys said about Predator's in Gilroy. Talk to Mike, Curtis, or Jimmy. They really know their stuff and will give you exactly what you need to get started.

Dont forget there's Sherwood Forest.
Home range of the Black Mountain Bowmen. Membership gets you a nice discount at Predators also.
Range is located off Santa Teresa Blvd In South San Jose. Public is welcome to shoot the range or the 3d course except during club shoots.
Welcome to the sport.
You might want to have your blood pressure checked cuz if it's high now you might be in trouble when you start missing shots at big game at 20yds.

Deedy, thanks, I am confident you will see evidence of everything I mentioned above this weekend.

I spent three hours within one hundred yards of a huge bear last fall, 8 1/2" rear pad not counting the toes, many times within thirty yards but never with a shot, this was during the general D8 season, afterwards I had no regrets of what weapon I was carrying, hell I don't even know another way.

Most folks don't understand us, but that's ok, if they understood they would do it too.
