I know they are incredibly effective when brushed in and when the hogs have become used to it, but has anyone ever used a pop up ground blind and had good success on pigs with a same day set up?
I don't know but we can dang sure try it when you get here... it wont matter much if it doesn't work. We can try it on some young pigs, if it scares them it would probably really scare an older pig. Do you have any "pig calls"? We can try out another theory I have too while we're at it...
Just my experience with call's, distressed piglet send's them running for the hill's but the hog grunt used softly when you're in heavy brush seem's to calm them down if the wind is right !
Probably like a soft grunt as opposed to that sharp warning grunt they make (just one time by one pig) right before they all head to the hills with 9's in their tails too. Gawd I hate it when that happens.
Dirtpoor- whats your take on the blind?
Almost every time I've used the blind animals have walked right by it. I see more game from it cuz the game doesn't see me fidgeting. It helps contain your scent I would think since you not out in the open swirling wind. I've had deer and turkeys walk right next to the blind, even when it's out in the open. Once the deer wind you they head for the hills tho. Never had a pig walk by my blinds yet. I would think the same thing as the deer for reaction.
IMHO, if you are bowhunting a simple ground blind will hide the drawing of a bow. I use two plastic coated aluminum plant stakes and a sheet of lightweight camo netting just to break up my form and shield the drawing of the bow.
a blind sure becomes handy when the weather is nasty or you have no good cover or you want to set up a cheep overnight roadside motel for a hot date! , other than that I rather be hunting in a treestand or natural ground blind or stalking!...................tra
I move around too much when I'm pig hunting, so a blind would be a hassle that I don't wanna deal with.
However, it seems to me that it would work just fine if you found the right spot to set up...even if you set up an hour or so before the critters show up. Set it in the cover, off the trail, and my money says they'll go right by.
I have after patterning the hogs for about a month on private ranch. very effective if you can leave your ground blind undisturb for couple of weeks. So they get used used to it being there. I had a young kid take his 1st hog with a bow from a ground blind years ago, on a father and son hunt. Ive lost access to the ranch since it changed management.
They work well out here, I don't know about hogs but Javelina and Deer come in really close! I would imagine around any food source, they would be gold. Scent contained and conceal movement!
Deedy, I've never used a pop-up blind, like Speck I cover too much ground for it to be practical. I do carry 2 pcs of ultra lite camo netting, one woodland and the other desert, you can almost always find a couple of sticks to prop the netting up with or just lay it across your bottom half to break up your profile. Another thing worth mentioning for you guys that hunt in snow country, I carry a very lite weight white cloth that I can put over my lower half when sitting against a tree or over my shoulders when I'm stalking in snow.
