How do you use your early bowhunting tags? You only get one buck before firearms season. I try to take a doe and "hope" for a wall hanger buck. I don't like to use my early tag on a small buck because I have to wait till firearms season is over for another chance at the wallhanger.

I only get two bowhunt trips to Missouri before gun season so I big buck hunt usually on both trips. I know I can take some meat during gun season if I don't mess up.

I don't usually take any trips back after gun season, it's too cold for this pansy Californian.

We go comatose under 40 degrees and freeze up like popcicles under 30.

I passed up an 8 pointer today, had him broadside at 9 yds. It was tough, but next year he could be real nice! His outside spread was a little shy of the ends of his ears. OK mass for his size. It would be a nice bowkill really, and if he presents the perfect shot I may take it, but I hope he makes it to next year!!!! My goal is 2 does for the season, and if the 16 pointer we saw last year shows up, him too!!! Otherwise I hope to let a few of these smaller bucks grow up a little.

The cold has arrived early. We actually have a chance of snow on Thursday ( I doubt we see much if any) and temps next weekend (Nov. 2-3) are supposed to drop into the low 20's with highs in the 30's. I can handle the cold, just keep the winds down.

Remember that the youth hunt starts the weekend of Nov. 2-3, so if you bowhunt, wear your orange.

Jesse,
Your correct...it's also nice to keep the does around during the rut to increase your chances of that buck coming by a short time later with his nose to the ground. I wonder how many people have missed an opportunity of a nice buck because they shot that doe.

Here is what a poacher can do to a nice rack. Notice the groove where the projectile busted the beam off. This was a buck that I was bowhunting 2 years ago. I never even noticed the missing side till after my shot or I would have let him walk. I knew it was him and usually don't stare long at the antlers

I'm still chasing the ever elusive 1st bow kill....

This is my third bow season I've hunted. My first was in '97, I hunted new ground last year, and Sunday was my first day out this year. I couldn't vote in your poll ~ it said I had already voted...????

Anyways ~ at this point, I'll probably take the first chance I can get, no matter what(so I can get over this "hump"). From then on, I'll take a doe or a wallhanger, with my early bow tags. I know the doe's are buck magnets, but we have plenty to go around, 'round here. My freezer is mighty low...

I wait on a wall hanger - now they have names thanks to getting photos of them with the homebrew gamecams. So I'm holding out for a 150 class buck with dual split brow tines - I have about 6 photos of him.

I have two boys - the 13 yr old has bagged nice bucks the last three years with a gun and is also bowhunting this year. Now the second boy is 10 and wants to go. One deer a year is really all we need, now I'm afraid we'll have two! We get lots of free beef from the in-laws, so its a little hard to reach over the T-bones in the deep freeze for venison. Dad may not shoot a deer for a few years.....

I may have to get a second job, my duck and deer hunting gear costs have tripled!

I usually wait for a normal 8 pt or better and mite take a doe late in the season but this year I mite take advantage of those $5 doe tags some northern counties have this year, wish that was state wide tho......
