:smiley-mouse:Ok so I am in the market for some new broadheads. I recently purchased the practice G5 broadheads with the hopes of buying the G5™ Outdoors Montec Fixed-Blade Broadheads to hunt with. Now my question is lately I have come across several reviews that have stated that the broadhead come extremely dull and even after sharpening are not much better. So if anyone has used these before your feedback would be helpful.

I've shot NAP Thunderheads and have yet to be disappointed. 125 grains for me. Check them out. I don't think you'll be disappointed either!

Are you sure the reviewers didn't have the Preseason (practice) broadheads? All the G5's I have seen were sharp. Also, if sharpening didn't help them, it sounds like they don't know how to sharpen them. It is a good broadhead, I don't think you will be disappointed.

The Montec is a good head. I've used it a few times with very good results. They do need to be sharpened out of the box though. Some light strokes on a diamond stone should have 'em shaving sharp.

Or you can buy the replaceable blade Strikers which come razor sharp.

My vote is for the Rage 2 blade as well: they are ridiculously destructive.

i went pig hunting with a group of guys that all shot the G5's. they were all at some varying degree of sharpness. i was the only one that stayed sober, so i went thru all six guys broadheads with my G5 sharpener and touched them up. they all came back beautifully. i shoot slicktricks, but those G5's looked like gunshots. i like the montecs...just too pricey IMHO.

Yes the montec comes dull, but it is easy to sharpen. Use a felt tip pen to mark the edge of the blade about half way down the bevel. Lay the blade flat on stone and push forward. Start off with strokes of six on each side until the ink on the blade starts to fade, then go to three strokes, then two. Once the ink is no longer visible switch to one stroke per side. At this point start checking the sharpness of blade. When the edge starts to feel sticky switch over to the 1200 grit stone, or lighter if you have it. I prefer quality stones over the montec sharpner, but I like really sharp blades, they make me feel good, lol. But the montec sharpner works just fine. hope that helps.

I saw "HeavyHorns" put a Montec a complete pass thru at 40 yds on a 175lb hog last weekend.Hog squeeked and ran twenty feet and just stood there looking around.I'd say that was a pretty sharp broadhead.....
And congrats to HeavyHorns on his first bow kill!!!Hopefully he will post up some pics..

(This topic is belongs in the bowhunting) But here goes
Harvested this pig from 40 yds w/ Grim reaper razor cut this past march. The pig expired withing 15 yds or so. No sharpening neccesary.

Gotta go with the guys who like the rages...I shoot the 2-blades and love them.

Alas, depending on out of state hunts...you can't always use mechanicals. They're illegal in both Oregon and Alaska for example. I always have some G5 Montecs ready to roll though...my fixed-blade of choice. I will agree that they need sharpened. The G5 sharpener works real well. Your screen-name SD Native would lead me to believe you're in San Diego...I guarantee there's two bow shops in San Diego that have the sharpener hanging on a rack right now.

I will second the slick tricks. They don't lie when they say that they shoot like field points, even out to 80 yards.

I have a friend who put a montec through the shoulder blade of a grizzly. There are pictures of it at DC Archery in Sunland. I use Slick Tricks, but montecs are great broadheads.

SlickTricks for me also - they shoot great and leave a devastating wound channel.
