Headed to the ranch this afternoon figuring the rain might get some pigs moving. Took my buddy who has earned the nickname "Veggie" as he's not been able to harvest a pig or deer in four years plus of trying. We arrived around 1:30 and started walking the ridge road looking down into the valley for any signs. No more than 10 minutes into the walk my buddy says "SHHHH!" and we immediately hear a group of pigs grunting in the oaks directly down the slope next to the road - VERY close to us! I walked 20 yards or so back down the road and see a sow stick her head out of the brush no more than 5 yards from my friend, then back down. Meanwhile the hogs are grunting and moving just below us. Meanwhile my buddy is watching a group of at least 20 sows and piglets no more than 15 yards from him - they must have been bedded down when we came along. One of the sows heads for him and he takes a shot - hits her in the head and drops her. Surprisingly none of the other hogs move so he's waving at me to come over and shoot another one. I took a few steps and saw a couple hogs just below the road standing perfect broadside to me, but passed on shooting one as I've got plenty in the freezer. They pretty quickly get the idea that they should head out and trotted away, grunting all the time.
A really nice first pig - 115 lbs or so, will be a great eater.
