I pull the bum out without one.
Cut the tail bone from the top side, then cut the skin around the bum (about a couple of inches from the butt hole) so you have a flap of skin (that includes the butt hole) attached to the tail (which becomes your handle). You then just pull firmly and slowly on the tail and the guts starts coming out allowing you to cut around the channel and free it all up.
Then when you have open the belly and dropped the guts out you can poke the tail down the hole and you can reach it from inside and pull it through (it is easy to feel you have it too because it is fur and not guts).

Used one for about 4 years now. They work great on deer, mariginal on hogs and elk. With the hogs and elk, you gotta play with it a bit, making sure the vanes get wrapped up into the intestines. Keep twitsting till it gets tight. Then pull and the butthole comes out and with a bit of intestines. Tie off the intestines, cut and pull back into the body cavity.

For around $10, you can't lose.
