State Buys 680 Acres to Expand Wildlife Reserve

From L.A. Times Wire Reports

A wildlife preserve near Lake Isabella, northeast of Bakersfield, will be expanded by nearly half, thanks to state funds.

The California Wildlife Conservation Board has agreed to spend $795,000 to add 680 acres to the Canebrake Ecological Reserve, a 1,400-acre wildlife preserve managed by the California Department of Fish and Game.

The purchase from unnamed property owners is expected to be completed in January. The land is key for wildlife moving between the U.S. Forest Service Dome Land Wilderness and property owned by the U.S. Bureau of Land Management.

Canebrake ER is along the south fork of the Kern River just east of Lake Isabella. Anybody know where the new property is? January sale might be time enough for some quail or bobcat hunting.

That could be a sleeper spot for next year. I don't know where it is but I plan on finding out.

Canebrake Ecological Reserve is located along Highway 178, 20 miles east of Lake Isabella, five miles east of the town of Onyx, in northeastern Kern County. Currently, the only public access is at a marked dirt parking lot off of the highway. There you will find an information sign with a map at the head of the public use trail. There are no seasonal closures, but regulations are in place to protect the resources as well as the outdoor experience for everybody. Also, visitors must close all of the gates they walk through so wayward cattle do not find their way onto the trail.

Sounds like a great spot. I love that area but have never hunted near there. Is hunting allowed on the reserve? If so, is that a X or D zone?

As it's an ER, there is no general hunting at Canebrake. According to the DFG website for it
http://www.dfg.ca.gov/lands/er/region4/canebrake.html
it does provide access to a federal property (BLM then USFS). Looks like it's the X-10/D8/D9 corner to me.

DFG is doing special draw quail/chuckar hunts this year at Canebrake. I got drawn for late January and will update if/when I go. Never been there myself.

PS That price seems pretty cheap to me - a little more than $1000 an acre.
