I've been hogging once along the central coast, a while back. I remember it being quite open. So I ask you --- how long are most of your shots? --- I have recently been thinking about a iron-sighted levergun, but would it benefit me to go with a scoped boltgun instead? What is your hog rig & include caliber/scope? Thanks!

this was my first pig rifle

Remington 700, Leupold VXII 3X9X40
130gr Barnes xxx

but i am fast becoming a HUGE fan of my new

Remington 11-87 Sportsman Deer (fully rifled 12 gauge)
with Leupold 4X7X30
Remington copper sabot

its nice and short, can take a beating and will for sure put any hog down at the range I attempt to shoot at (under 100 yards)

Remington 700 LSS in .300 win. mag. with a 4-12 X 40 VXII with 200 TSX's. Shots from 20 yds out to 370 for the longest. Admittedly the long poke was an elk in Wyoming. I also use a Browning A Bolt in 7mm rem. mag. But we are really enjoying using our Omega's. Shooting a hog with a black powder rifle is just kinda cool. Been close enough to hogs many times to use a bow on 'em, but never did. You don't need much distance usually; of course that will be the time you see that really gnarly big cutter black boar at 300 yards and all you have is a 30-30 lever gun. Oops.

I do like to carry enough gun to do the job on the biggest animal I am ever likely to see out there. That's my rule of thumb.

How long are the majority of shots in CA? What is the typical range?

Pecci, it can vary a LOT.

I think an iron-sighted lever gun would be OK, but I wouldn't use a short-range rifle like a 30-30 or such unless you want the challenge of getting close.

Remember, hogs are killed on a regular basis by bow-hunters at ranges inside 50 yards. It's just harder.

Personally, if I were looking for one, do-it-all rifle for hog hunting I'd go with a longer-shooting caliber like the 30-06. You can do something like the Browning Lever Action (BLR). Iron sights are fine, if you're a good marksman at most reasonable hunting ranges (out to 200 yards). My own choice would be to use a scope.

As far as average ranges... an average for all of my hogs would be about 40 yards. But the couple of times I shot longer, I was glad I had enough gun.

Will you be better off with a .270, .308, .30-06 type scoped rifle? Absolutlely, way more versatile.

Can you kill them with an open sited lever gun? Yes, just get closer.
