Panfish limit standardized at 25 fish for all species

Jim Matthews Outdoor News Service

18 March 2010

The 2010 sportfishing regulations include a new limit on panfish. In the past, there was no limit on bluegill, redear, or other sunfish, and a 25-fish limit on crappie. Starting this year, the limit on all of these panfish is now 25 in aggregate of all species.

“We’ve been asking the Fish and Game to put a limit on bluegill and redear for several years,” said Clay Rutledge at Bob’s Bait in Bakersfield. “But we didn’t know they were just going to combine them with the crappie limit.”

Rutledge, along with a number of marina operators, have been making sure their customers know about the change because many anglers often take home huge stringers of bluegill in addition to a limit of crappie. Under the new rules, anglers can only keep a total of 25 crappie, bluegill or redear (or other perch and sunfish species).

The change does not affect tilapia at the Salton Sea. While tilapia are often considered a “panfish,” there is still no limit on these fish at the Salton Sea or Colorado where these fish are commonly caught.
