HI I need some help finding some public land hunting in California for Hogs, my grandma was saying there was a spot in Grass Valley but I don't know. If someone can give me a link or some info on Public Hunting land in California which is good for Hogs that would be great. Thank you

I would start by doing a search on this site under public land. After that do a search on the net for BLM/California and that should get you started.

I don't know were you're at, but most of the people here will probably tell you the same thing. Hunting hogs on public land is very difficult, you could and will put in a lot of miles before even seeing a hog. I don't know of any areas around grass valley, but the best public land hog spots will be in the central valley. Areas like Camp Roberts and Fort Hunter ligget, both are military bases open to the public and will probably be your best chance at success on public land. Then theres areas outside of holister, which is all BLM land. There's several places out of Coalinga that do produce hogs, but it's tough going at best. Check out the BLM website for Hollister and it will give some starting points. Also, go the the DFG website and download the link to Hunting wild pigs in California. It will give you small maps, information regarding that area and phone numbers. If I were you, i'd stick with the lands that in down in the cental valley area.

Good luck, and welcome to JHO

I'm posting this from Mel. Yes, camp roberts and Fort hunter ligget are both public land. They're off of hwy 101 down south of King City.

Let me know if you need anymore help.

Go to Lake Sonoma; the pigs are there, it's free, it's close, and there's plenty of info on Jesse's to help ya out.

Have not been there for a long time, but I use to see them every now and then at Cottonwood Creek, off Highway 152. DFG owns it, so it is public; but they use to have restrictions on when it could be used and when it was okay to take pigs. Call the Los Banos office for info. I never shot at any, because you have to hike a couple of miles to get to them; and I didn't want to drag a hog that far.

There's lots of places in N CA. Just check out the DFG and BLM websites. If you don't mind walking, try Cache Creek Management Area. It would be closest. Try Spenceville WA, it is also close to you, but not sure if there are any pigs there.

Shoot,

Sounds like you already found the BLM site. Just remember that a lot of their info is fairly old, and conditions change evey year. Don't be totally discouraged by what you read there, but don't get too excited about the "good" reports either.

Check out Jesse's main page for info on local butchers. He has a whole pile of stuff available on the Jesse's Hunting and Outdoors Journal.
