Cabela’s went public in 2004, they received a large amount of money for selling their stock but then lost control of the company. The money was used for expansion and they picked a lousy time for that, the economy tanked around 2006. It was not a good plan, to many stores and to close together. They slowly recovered but were in a decline, with both the stock price and store-sales, before Elliott came in and bought 10% of the company. Elliott did not “force” a sale, what they did was “entice” everyone with making a ton of money, so guess what? Everyone said “yes, screw Sydney, show me the money”. The real culprit here is the FED and their monetary policy. Printing money and basically loaning it at next to nothing allows this type of thing to happen. Oh, and the internet has a lot to do with the brick and mortar collapse.

Unfortunately no matter how new "winners" are created someone always loses. It's sad for the Sidney workers though.
