Was out doing an evening deer hunt. I stepped out of my truck and heard the first buggle high up on a ridge. And hour or so later 11 cows came out of the canyon to drink followed by a monster tule bull. A full 6x6 probably 350+ A while later a lone 4x4 bull came down, but was very cautious and kept his distance from the screaming bull. Sure wish I had one of those tags instead!! Good luck!

I was at Cache Creek this week and saw 3 bulls, one of which was good, another was decent and the third was young. Plus 3 spikes and a handful of cows. I was looking for a dead bull, but by the time I got to him not much left and someone had grabbed the head and antlers so no teeth for me to age. I would be surprised if there is a 350 bull at Cache Creek, not impossible but it hardly has the habitat to produce record book animals. I have seen good bulls there in the helicopter but they are few and far between and none have been 350, but nothing would surprise me any more. 350 would be a great bull at Grizzly Island and they do have them at Grizzly along with East Park. I stopped saying impossible years ago because stranger things have happened.

Legend has it, there is a big bruiser that cruises along highway 16 and feeds in the alfalfa and is seen often. Every year he gets more and more junk on his head and to date, or last I heard, he a big 7x7 with some good cheaters and perfect symmetry.

But again, this is all legend. And I'll believe when I see some evidence.

Which stretch of 16? I can not remember there being alfalfa, at least anywhere close to the 16/20 interchange.

I was up there a couple weeks ago and have seen the bull you are talking about he is huge!!! I think his small body make his head gear look much larger than it is, but he is huge!! I'v been going up there once a month for a while now and have seen them grow from buds. I had spotted them (4 bulls)moving thru the brush at about 400yds, the first thing i noticed was the body size of 1 of them. He was huge compared to the rest, slightly sagging back big belly and a head that made the others look like yearlings. The next trip a month later he was spotring about 10" of antler with 3 extra nubs, the othere were half that in both areas. the next trip he doubled in length and added two more points. I went awhile with out seeing him with the others and then BAM he is a beautiful 6X and the others are runts copmaired.

Did you spot him on the east side of the hills? I have heard the they work their way east of Cache Creek out of hills every so often to feed in the fields along 505. I've never seen them, it's only hearsay. But was just curious.

Never seen elk anywhere near 505. I have seen them many times though on both sides of 16 south of 20 but before the road heads into the canyon. If those elk ever headed east from that area they would end up at I-5 somewhere around Greenbay Rd.

Now, not to hijack the thread but I have read on another forum that antelope can sometimes be seen on the west side of the valley starting up by Willows. Don't know if that is true but I have heard it before a few times.

TRUE! I personally saw a buck & a doe out in a farmer's filed off of 162 in the flat part between hwy 5 & the foothills... I might even have a picture somewhere...? It was about 10 years ago.

I've seen some of the elk at the edge of the valley - right where highway 20 enters into the foothills. I've seen them all along 20 to Clear Lake, as well as both sides of 16 through the canyon. I've seen many elk in the Wildlife Area, including a few of the collared ones from a few years back. The biggest bulls that I've ever seen in the area were just north of the 20/16 intersection at the edge of Bear Valley. I saw a bull up there that would have scored pretty high for Tule elk. But overall, I'm still more impressed with the East Park Reservoir herd...

I think it was three years ago a 5X6 did make it over the hill in to the valley (about 22 miles from hwy 16 and 20) and it was the talk of the town for about two weeks ( I live about 3 miles from where he was spotted). DFG was all over the area watchin over him, there were A LOT of pics of him out in the fields, then just like that he was gone! never heard if he made it back over the hill or not, but it is confirmed that he was here.

The bull that was by 505 was a relocated bull. He was first at Concord NWS and we moved him to Grizzly Island, well he swam back to Concord NWS. So we caught him again and took him to Cache Creek, apparently he did not like that so much so crossed over the range and came down near the valley. I looked for him twice and could hear his signal but not find him. A buddy took some pics one week and apparently the local Sheriff was chasing him in a wheat field in his car (not sure why). Found him dead the next week, no apparent cause. He looked good until he died. That is about the only elk I have heard of near 505.
