Not that I didn't believe everyone who said don't waste your time south of hwy-20 but I went out today to check it out. Yupp....no pigs anywhere close to me. O'well had a nice hike anyways.

I sure did find a new area for deer hunting though. Deer and elk were all over the place. I hiked to a few different ridges and glasses the valleys and saw probably 20+ deer and a handful of elk. I know the deer will probably be long gone by Sept / Oct but I think I may have to plan a 2 day trip with deer and pig tags.

I have not really looked at a map yet but does anyone know what deer zone Cache Creek is in. Probably A.

They'll be there, they'll just be hiding. At least the boys will. Where'd you go in ?

Its A- zone , you have to go to Fouts Springs , the base of Snow Mt. then it becomes B-zone .

Don’t worry the deer. They will be there in Sept/Oct. They come out towards the end of Sept, right after the season ends.

The deer will be there along with half the state of CA hunters. hwy 20 is lined up with cars during the A zone opener for that area. Plus the 1000 degree temp, Ticks, rattle snakes.

all the great things about hunting and the outdoors, Archery opener is only 6 months away

I went in at the entrance just past Cowboy Camp on hwy-16. Didn't get back as far as I would have liked because I dropped / lost my gps unit and spent a couple of hours backtracking to find it. Finally found it in a small ravine that I had to do some serious crawling and climbing to get through and I did not want to back down there but it was worth it when I found my gps.

Funny how technology really limits you sometimes. I had maps of the area with me but when I head out I always mark the location where I start and very rarely do I use the maps so when I lost my gps I was somewhat disoriented. I would have been able to make it back because I knew where hwy-16 was and I would have just had to hike out to the road then make my way back tot he truck but I have been up in the Sierras and would have really been in trouble if I did not have my gps. I guess I need to study my maps better before I head out and while I am on the trail so if anything happens I will not be in a sticky situation.

KSBerry;

Did you make it in as far as the lakes? The old stone building foundations?

No I did not see any of that. I figure I got back about 3+ miles and then I spent the next few hours back tracking and looking for my gps unit. I was there for about 8 hours and was wondering around the same area for about 2 hours. How far back is the lake? From hwy 16 I headed west and did not see any lake or buildings.

BTW - No turkeys either.

FYI , guys the road that goes up to the old buildings , not much left except the foundations ( really just footings ) and up the hill and west is the Old Stage Coach Route ! Lots of history up there if you know where to look . Also a few areas where indians had their camps ( villages ) for many years , a college or two has digs going on up there on one of the smaller creeks .

Keep looking for the turkeys , there is a good #'s of them up there , try using a locater call - make em shock gobble !
