If I were military I'd definately be applying for the FHL elk. And as DFGELK posted here already, you can apply for the general tags as well. Do both, and since you don't have max points, apply for a hunt that only has one or two bull tags. I drew a tag like that with less than max points.

KED - Welcome to Jessie's and welcome to California. As others have pointed out, you have a HUGE advantage being active military and applying for the FHL drawing. The place has a great Tule Elk herd.

It's good you like a "warm weather rut hunt"! The high this year during the either sex archery hunt was 110F-115F!

Contact Hunter Liggett, they run their own draw system for the military side of the tags. You can also apply in the general draw. Like others have said it is very difficult to get a tag but some of the hunts are starting to turn over, granted they are mostly archery cows. But some new hunts are in the works so that should help (a little). Look at the odds and take your best guess.

Good Luck

Joe

Joe,

Let me see If I understand this correctly. You can apply for the FHL military hunt and the normal seasons, concurrently? In effect you've got 2 applicantions out for a draw in the same year?

yep, the military sets their own rules for those tags. If you were lucky enough to get drawn for both the military tag and the general tag for FHL you can only accept one tag. Basically tags are given to the military and they set their own draw system, it is not run out of DFG for the military side. The FHL tags that go in the general draw are handled by DFG in the normal draw.
