Please correct me if I am wrong but... I read in this months CWA magizine that this is the last stamp. Did I read something wrong, or is there more to it. If it is true, where is the money gonna come from that funds all the special bird hunts?

Yes, there is a likely change coming because of the ALDS (Automated License Draw System) hopefully implemented in 2008, although it was originally anticipated this year but we had contractor problems/difficulties.

ALDS would make producing/sending a "real" upland game stamp problematic. Essentially, the Dept. found it was going to cost a significant chunk of funds to get a real upland game stamp to the hunters (via mail)-- funds we'd rather see, and hopefully the hunting public would too, go to on-the-ground projects. So, we propose eliminating the stamp itself.

Additionally, it is not as sought or valued as the duck stamp art; the duck stamp will continue.

Hunters would still be paying an upland game fee.

Now, I have to go check my "facts"...

I have a lifetime license
how is that going to be affected ?
before, I went and purchased the upland game bird stamp
will I now have to pay another fee like I do when I buy the stamp ?
where will I pay that fee and to whom ?

First we had the pheasant stamp. Then DFG said we will increase the cost of the licence and no stamp needed to hunt pheasants! Then DFG said you need a upland bird stamp, and if you do not have one you cannot hunt pheasants!Do you fellow hunters see a circle here?

I was told the same thing when i purchased my upland stamp for my lifetime license as well. the cashier had never seen a lifetime license and thought I made it myself. So how will they determine who has paid for the Upland stamp and who has not when a warden is out checking licenses?

As long as we're talking stamps, the Harvest stamp is annoying.
Retailers forget about it, and I once was denied hunting Camp Pendleton (pre 9/11) because I didn't have harvest stame.

Make completing the harvest info part of the base license. Since upland stamp will be in base license the harvest stamp should be also. Two rookie hunters this year didn't get harvest stamps and had to return to the retailer to get them, luckily before opener.

Hopefully harvert survey is useful, but the separate and free stamp is annoying.

Well that's swell...........at least we used to at least get SOMETHING for that fee.

What I'd like to see someday is the price go down or a fee go away. Wishful thinkin.........

The Game Bird Heritage Program is funded by the upland game bird stamp -- we run a bunch of sponsored junior/youth/women/family hunts through the program and do upland game habitat improvement projects, studies, and publications on upland game hunting.

Am looking into the question about the lifetime license deal and how that will work with the new ALDS system next year; I don't know the answer.

I'm fairly certain that the ALDS system that spits out the license will have the various stamps/permits you have paid for printed on it. It'll be the tough paper version (non-tearable)-- look here for some answers to general questions: yeah- here! must be Friday...

If I'm following this conversation correctly, ya'll wont be receiving an actual stamp??? Is this correct?

We have a similar system in CO. I get my license on multiple business card size perforated pieces. Most of the time it is 3 pieces. The state stamp is on the print out but I don't receive an actual stamp unless I ask for one to be sent. I actually like it this way. I don't have to worry about getting the stamp all sweaty and dirty. Keeps the stamp nice and clean for the scrapbook!

Nevada has a similar set up. No stamp. All you get is a number on your liciense. You can get it online, and print it out. Same with fishing licenses and trout stamps. Even the HIP stamp can be done online or over the phone. the best part is, IMO, you don't have to hassle dealing with regular license vendors and store personel who don't hunt, or fish, and don't really know what they are doing.

That can be annoying. Fortunately most of our retail stores that sell hunting and fishing gear are well versed in issuing licenses and tags. Our upland and all another stamps went virtual a while ago. They did mail the actual stamp for a while cause some folks like to collect them. All our licenses and tags are identical. Same piece of paper out of a printer. The only difference is what is printed on the front and they put what is basically clear packing tape over that.

Pheasantlvr- still haven't heard directly from Licenses on how the Lifetime will work, but seeing some of these posts and remembering the presentations on ALDS, California's system will be similar to the other states that are doing this-- perforations, writing of what was purchased, printed on the sheet. Oregon, Wash, Colo.. others perhaps that have already gone this way.

An actual "upland game stamp" would also have to be mailed as foulshot describes for Colo. Cost estimates for that in CA are over $100,000/year (welcome to CA).

I'd suggest (hope) hunters would rather see that money go to Game Bird Heritage programs and habitat work, so we've recommended no real stamp anymore.

here's the word from License folks:

Under the ALDS, a physical Upland Game Bird Stamp will not be printed; however, upon payment of the required fee, an Upland Game Bird Validation will be printed on the hunting license.

For lifetime licensees, there will be two options:

- For hunters who have purchased the Lifetime Additional Bird Hunting Privileges, the UGB validation will be printed on their lifetime license. Hunters who posses this package will receive the UGB validation without payment of any fee.

- Hunters who do not have the Additional Bird Hunting Privilege Package may purchase an UGB validation annually. The validation will be printed by the ALDS.

The UGB stamp/validation will be available at many more license agents than presently because all license agents will be capable of selling it, not only agents who carry hunting license items. Hunters will also have the ability to purchase the validation from DFG offices and on the Department's web site.
