Hey all. I just received an Olympus Camedia D-340R. I was just wondering if anyone was sort of familiar with this model and/or knows the right procedure to turn it on to see if it works. I have the batteries in, but no SmartMedia card, and it does not turn on with anything I do (if I'm even doing the right thing). Do I need to get a SmartMedia card before it can turn on?

I'd really appreciate any help I could get. Hopefully I did not get a dud.

Mossburg, Not familiar with that camera but if it has some internal memory you should not need a memory before it come on. Double check the batteries to make sure they are the right type and installed correctly or if they rechargables they are charged. Other than that I really can't say.

I have 2 Olympus ( not your model) and neither need the card to turn on. However my C700 has an outside knob to select mode, if yours does if its in the playback mode the picture taking part of the camera will not turn on.

My D560 is the kind that you slide open the lens cover to turn it on and other than no battery bad battery or battereries in wrong it turns on and tells me there is no card.

Didn't you get a card with the camera? Is it Smart Media or the new XD Picture Card?

I had another Olympus that went bad and they did not stand behind it. Said it was caused by dirt.

Thanks for the replies.

Melvin, I've bought new batteries and put them in every way possible. My D-340 does have a slide door to turn on the camera...but nothing works. I think it's a problem with the battery compartment thing. I can't tell for sure though. I'm going to go to Best Buy and rig the camera up with an AC Adapter to see if I can get it running...but if it still doesn't work, then it's an internal problem ...so then I think I would just trash the camera cause it's not worth fixing.

Thanks again for the replies.

Hope it works Mossberg, Let me know what they tell you. I'm glad I live so far away from a Best Buy, otherwise I'd be maxing out my Cabelas Visa all the time

Mossberg it should come on when you slide the lens cover open.If there is no card it will indicate this on the screen but it will still come on.Also with the lens door shut you can hit the blue/green button on the back of camera and the screen will come on to view pictures but without a card it will just show the no card symbol.

Do not trash it just yet. That model is famous for having a bad smartmedia card door switch. When you open the door for the smartmedia card you will see a small switch that gets pressed in when the door is shut.If you have your camera on and opened this door it would automatically shut off camera. It is a safety feature.

The switch tends to wear out or quite working all together over time. When this happens the camera thinks the door is open and will not let the camera turn on.

With batteries in and lens door open,go ahead and open smartmedia door and use something small to push in on switch.Wiggle it around a bit.alot of times that gets it going again. You will know if it starts working because you will hear the camera turn on.

If this does not do it and you feel like taking camera apart it is easy enough to check switch and see if it is bad and if it is can be easily bypassed.Email if ya need help.
