I have just recently began to let a lot of the smaller bucks walk, so I thought it might be nice to start taking pictures of them to be able to preserve the event. I am leaning toward digital because of its quietness, not needing processing and speed of picture development. However, I haven't ruled out 35mm. I thought I would come to the professionals and ask for some recommendations. I would like to stay under $300. I also need some advice on what type of zoom I might need to look for. I wouldn't need much I don't think. The area I hunt is thick and rarely see anything beyond 75 yards but I would like to have close-ups that will show details of the rack. Thanks for your help.

Hi chili. I know this is already exceeding your budget, and I respect that, but I thought that I would share with you my experience(s) with my camera. I use the Sony F707. I have had it for a year. There is now a newer F717. The 707 can be found (although they are running out) for about $600-700. If you are willing to get one used you can do better.
The 707 has really enabled me to capture some wonderful wildlife photos. It has a 10x zoom and 5MP. It is definitely a camera you can grow into and not have to get a "better" one later. I have even extended my zoom range by adding a 1.7x telephoto lens. That gives me a total of 17x (that includes digital zoom). Also the zoom mechanism is totally silent.
I have had no regrets with this camera.

I answered this question in Prohunters' post if you want to look there too. If you're wanting to shoot wildlife you'll want a 10x optical zoom camera. Everyone I meet who bought 3x or 5x optical zooms wish they had more zoom when they take wildlife pics. The 3x and 5x optical zooms work great for group photos or close in shots but out past say 30 yards you'll need more zoom.
I use an Olympus 2100 which is getting close to the $300.00 mark now. It has 10x optical zoom and is 2.1 megapixels. The newer models of my camera is the Olympus 710 and 730.

Thanks for the info on the Oly C2100. Checked it out on the Digital Dave site and it looks really good for the $. I'll keep my point and shoot HP 3X zoom, but would like to expand my horizons with some wildlife pics. The best price I could find is $399. Anybody see it cheaper? WB
