Took my grandson to the Jr. deer hunt yesterday and as last year we saw far more elk than deer. Does DFG Elk (Joe), or anyone know if they will ever start having a few tags in the drawing for Camp Roberts?

(If they do, since I brought the subject up on JHO wouldn't it be fair to give me the first tag?????):lol bashing sign:

From my conversations with the unit biologist that group of elks seem to be stagnant (can not remember the numbers). Basically not increasing so with the numbers, I do not forsee a hunt in the future unless they increase to a sustainable number (with harvest). With the furlough stuff I may not be able to redo the environmental document (info coming down from those above me). If that is the case then no new hunts next year or zone boundary changes. I hope I can do it because there are several changes I want to make on zones and add new hunts.

Thanks for the response. Last year we saw one huge herd, but it had a bull that was unbelievable. This year we saw elk in four different locations, mostly cows and small bulls; there was one 6x6, but it was really not all that impressive.

If they ever do allow elk hunting, I would be in favor of making itavailable to Juniors only. Camp Roberts does a wonderful job with the Jr. deer hunts, and giving the kids a break over us old geezers sounds good to me.

Thanks for the reply. It is truely a blessing to have you and Wildlifebranch on this forum (maybe not all government is evil!).

I was at the same hunt, and I saw a group of 4 bulls. I talked to several other hunters who had seen large groups of 20+ elk.
One of the Fish and Game wardens there said they were monitoring the elk herds and future hunts were certainly a possibility.
