I know you have probably addressed this somewhere on this forum, but I can't find it.

I want to go to Camp Roberts on the May hunt. How do you get a permit? Can you pick it up on Friday before the hunt or is it done when you register? I printed out the map, hunting brochure and the fishing program, but I don't see anything there about how to obtain a permit, only the opening day reservation form.

Also, do you know of a good place to stay while there? Motel 6 would work for me.

Thanks for your help and maybe I'll se ya there.

Hey man, I'll let you know one thing because you gotta act fast.
I found that getting a motel room is very difficult. I just made my reservation yesterday at the motel6, and lucky for me I only needed sunday night because no rooms were available for saturday. My kids and I went last week without a reservation and were told by every motel that they had all been booked for a while. We got lucky when someone cancelled at the last minute and I was standing there. I highly recommend getting some reservations ASAP.
If you can find a way to get all the forms ahead of time, you can just turn them in when you pay at the registration shack, but if you're far away like me, you can download the firearms form and get the rest when you get there.
The way it's been working for me is:
1. Line-up at the gate before opening time.
2. When they open the gate, and you drive up, the first guy there will ask for your driver's license, vehicle registration, and proof of insurance ( have them ready).
3. You will pull forward to the next guy who will ask for your firearms registration form, and MAY ask you to pull over and show him that the serial numbers on your weapons match those on the form.
4. You will park and go to the registration windows. They will want the registration forms (you can get them from a table and fill them out before approaching the windows), your hunting license, pig tags, and money.
5. You get back in your vehicle and head for the field!

Good luck, I'll be in a white Dodge 4x4

Try the Farmhouse Motel in Paso Robles. My buddy owns it and might have rooms available, especially if you reserve one a few days to a week before you get there. It's not the nicest place in the world, but for hunting it's just fine.

Here's the specifics:

425 Spring Street
Paso Robles, CA 93446
(805) 238-1720

You know, Camp Roberts is fast becoming my favorite pig hunting locale! Both times I went, I found new things to like about that place. Memorial day will be my 3rd visit, and I hope to be in the right place and time, this time. My 12 year old daughter liked it there so much that she's going to get her license and take a crack at those pigs herself.
Thanks Boar Tracks, for turning me on to this place!

Blastmaster,

You mentioned in your post above that...

"You will pull forward to the next guy who will ask for your firearms registration form, and MAY ask you to pull over and show him that the serial numbers on your weapons match those on the form."

What if the rifle I have/use was given to me by my father and I don't have a firearms registration form, would I not be allowed access to hunt?
How does one get a firearms regestration form?

don't worry, the only thing that the weapons reg form is a inspection of the gun ser#. they give you a form at the gate if you don't have one. there is no computer check or anything like that. all they want is to make sure is that the gun is legal to hunt with as per DFG code.
good luck

Yeah, man
It's just one of thier forms you can download from thier website. No big deal. Just don't take any weapons that won't be used for the hunting you intend to do. For example, if you are going pig hunting, don't take a rimfire. Believe me, the people there are all about helping you out!

Well guys, looks like i'm going to be camping. Just have a few questions regarding the camping. Gunner mentioned the turnout by the gate, is there shade there and is this an actual camp site. Is there anything on the base and how would I go about making a resv. or is it first come first served. I will most likely be staying at the turnout, so if other options don't pan out, look for a brown 4-runner. I'll be taking my girl friend with me, she loves to go and wants to start hunting as soon as I get her the safety course completed. Any answers to these questions will be appreciated. I'll be taking my rifle and bow just so I can move around if needed.

See ya there.

Its first come first served, and all the turnout is,a spot by the east garison gate that is by the railroad tracks off the base.
