which leg is the positive side and which is the negative side on a capacitor?

Depends on the cap...
Aluminum electrolytics (look like a little metal can with a plastic sleeve) have a ( - ) mark - usually with an arrow pointing to one lead - it's the negative lead.

Tantalum electrolytics usually have a ( + ) with an arrow pointing to the positive lead.  They look like little blobs of epoxy - because they are :)

Ceramic disk, polyester, mica, and assorted other caps have no polarity marks - doesn't matter which way.


BTW  - some aluminum electrolytics are "bipolar" or non-polarized and can go either way - but they are used mostly in audio crossovers.
