Experimental Version of Radar Uses Mobile Phone Signals
Siemens unit Roke Manor Research and defense contractor BEA Systems are developing a technology that uses GSM mobile phone signals to track objects.
Called "Celldar," the technology uses the same principles as radar, but the transmitting and receiving devices don't have to be in the same location. In a test of Celldar, the research firm attached two cell phones that acted as receivers to a computer equipped with converters to digitize the cell phones' signals. The system was able to detect vehicles through foliage and people moving in a parking lot.
The two companies have agreed to develop the technology.
