After reading the Berlin story and hearing that someone died from being attacked by a hog, I think we start a charging/attack topic.

My story –

After a lot of unsuccessful Public Land hunts, my friend and I finally broke down and hired a guide for a hog hunt (10 years ago). Long story short. I went off with one guide because I wanted to do a spot-in-stock hunt. He said we had to do it now and if we didn’t find anything, we would hunt later with the dogs. So him and I set out and started walking around. We saw a group of pigs feeding around 300 yards away. We got into +150 yards and I spotted a nice young boar away from the group. I told the guide that’s the one I want. So I took aim and fired. One big bam and they were gone. The hog I was shooting at did a little jump and ran off with them. The guide said I hit it. I didn’t think I hit it. I told him I think I shot under (I know it went right under its belly). He said no – no – you hit it. So for the next 15 min we looked for blood.

No blood. The guide and I went in different directions, still looking for it. I came across what looked like a huge boulder with a huge tree against it. I went over to it and realized it was 3 huge boulders and the tree covering it made almost like a cave. 3 steps in and I see a huge boar. It’s just lying down right in the middle of this thing, eyes closed. I thought “Holy s**t, I did hit it”. As soon as those thoughts went through my head, the F’r wakes up. I realized this is a totally different HUGE boar. As soon as it sees me it charges. It gets less than 2 feet away and I shoot. I hit it somewhere in the center top shoulder area. That stopped its charge. The shot blew out my eardrums (I’m still in this “cave” thing). It instantly gets itself together and starts again. As soon as it starts again (I’m reloading and walking backwards out) around 3-4 other hogs start running towards me and the opening (the pigs where in the back of this “cave” thing and I never knew they were there). Those pigs are running full speed to get out. I’m halfway out. As soon as they get near the boar, the boar changes directions and follows them out. They’re all out now, running full speed (and I’ll never forget one was a dark/light pink spotted one).

As they’re running, I can see the boar is hurt. I put it on his shoulder (-15 yards) and fire. The F’r does a back flip and starts the pig sounds. As soon as it’s back on the ground, and stable, the F’r goes for me again. This time I run from it like a little girl (I didn’t reload in time). It passes me. It drops and starts crawling away. I shoot it and it’s finally done.

The guide comes up a few min later (he had no idea why I was shooting so much). He sees the pig and starts high 5’n me and telling me it’s a monster. I tell him the story and he’s like “I got to remember this spot”. I tell him about the pink pig and he wants to find that one.

We started cleaning the hog and see everything inside is in pieces but the heart. It was completely intact. I basically shot the thing 3 times from point blank range to -15 yards with a 270 and it still had a lot of fight in it. I can see how easy it would be to get cut, but I don’t know about getting killed.

I have been charged one more time but this was the best one (and my best hog).

Great story! Haven't had the "pleasure" of a close encounter with hog (yet)...

Cape buffalo...yes. Hog...no.

Hope to hear more about this. BTW, the new American Hunter magazine has some amazing stories of charges this month. You can read an amazing one online at: American Hunter Magazine-Grizzly attack story

Great story, I've been half charged by a very large wounded sow but nothing like that. In my opinion wild pig charges happen for tow reasons. The pig is wounded or you're in the way. Sounds like in your case it was the latter.

I shot, what looked like a little 150lb sow, that was facing me. She took off, and went into some thick brush, down in the river. So I went back to the property owners house, got him and his dog, to help track it across the river. We get a couple hundred yards from where it went in, and start hearing some gurgled breathing. My buddy asks if he can shoot it if he sees it, and I tell him go ahead... no sooner than thats out of my mouth, and I hear him scream, and shoot. I rush over to him, and his eyes are as big as baseballs, and a dead pig at his feet, and blood on his pants. He said it was trying to gore him! As he checked his leg for cuts, I checked out the hog. Seems my head on shot, which I thought went right into his chest, actually blew the tip of his nose and lower jaw off. Lucky for him, had it still had it's uppers, he might have done some damage. This guy is pretty cool and collected, so to hear him scream, and the look on his face was priceless. I can't seem to get him to go in the deep brush with me anymore, though.

My wife shot a sow with her .243. At the time the sow was running towards her and my aunt. My brother and I had pushed a sounder out of the brush that we doing a deer push through. This sow is running at my wife so she thinks she's getting charged. She opens fire and hit the sow dead on. Sow keeps coming. She jacks another round in and fires. Another hit. Sow keeps coming. Another round. And another and finally the sow dies at her feet. Four hits dead on. Shows that A. .243 ain't what you wanna shoot pigs in the head with, and B. I don't think she was getting charged. I think that was the direction the pig was going and they and the jeep were in the way. C. Jump in the jeep if you don't wanna shoot the pig and you wanna get out of the way!

I'll never forget an experience I had with some friends of mine in the San Arlo area. There was 4 of us hunting one day and we hadn't seen anything. So my friend Tanner decided he was going to do a push, while the rest of us watched from an adjacent ridgeline.

About 20 minutes go by with nothing. Then, all of the sudden, it's World War III on on the other ridge. I grab the bino's expecting to see a hog on the ground, but that wasn't the case. Tanner is back pedaling, fast, and trying to reload his BAR. He's got a good sized boar on his heels and he's SCREAMING. Tanner manages to crack off the next 3 shots and the boar turns away and heads over the ridge. We meet up with him and he's liquid paper white. Says he heard a grunt and went into a thicket of brush. He was crouching down to move through the brush and then he saw the boar coming at him. He fired the first two shots from his knees and the next two while running backwards. "Dude, I thought I was dead!"

I was rolling. Hearing a 6-foot plus guy scream like a little girl was priceless. In the end, obviously I was glad he was ok. But it was hilarious none-the-less.

My archery hog charged me in the brush when I was tracking it. Not a fun experience. I yelled as loud as I could as it was coming at me. I side stepped it but almost fell.

The way you get killed by a hog is when you are on the ground and it charges you again. If it gets your jugular, you are done.

Cheers,

I must be doing something wrong - every pig I've shot with a rifle has died in short order.. Even the ten with those copper created bullet holes.

I did wound a pretty big pig one time while bowhunting, and mindful of the danger, I did the right thing and sent Speckmisser in to go find it.

Hey! So that was your agenda!

I thought you were out there backing me up, but when I came out of the tunnel you were long gone!

Never been "charged", but have had a couple of panicked hogs nearly run me over. This is the case with most hog "attacks". The animals run blind when they're scared (pretty crappy survival instinct if you ask me), and will run right into a human. Usually you just have to get the heck out of the way and the encounter will be over, however, things can get dicey if they're right on top of you when they recognize you as a threat. The twin to the pig I shot on Monday did exactly that... charged up the hill directly at me. I stepped aside at about two feet, and he turned his head and snapped at me as he went by (if I hadn't been so far back in that hell hole, I'd have been packing out two hogs that morning).

The closest I've seen to real aggression was a big boar in Tejon, facing off with me at about 10 yards and popping his teeth. It was almost dark, and I'd just shot a huge sow... probably his intended girlfriend. As I walked down to collect her, he was standing there in the fog staring me down (probably trying to figure out what the heck I was). I really thought I was about to get charged, and had the .44 leveled between his eyes. He finally turned his butt to me and wandered back into the brush.

I do know that the pure Eurasian boar, like those in Germany, can get really aggressive and dangerous. I've seen them literally gang up and turn on the dogs, and I'm sure they would do the same thing to a human pursuer.

So, my hunting partner and I spot a couple of small hogs--80-90 lbs. down in the canyon; we have no interest in 'em. Another hunter spots 'em and bang-bang down they go. Unfortunately he doesn't know how to get down in there with the truck. We lead him down there and what the heck; we're here, let's give him a hand. I'm the only one that brings a gun (ruger no. 1, 7mm rm) and we walk up to the first one. I'm leading (you know, the idiot with the gun) and notice he's breathing. (The guy gutshot this hog) I comment on him moving and he takes off right at me. Now, my hunting partner tells me later that he set his feet to dodge, saw it was headed at me and relaxed, saying: "Don't shoot the truck." The hog blows by me, striking me on the left leg as I dodge right. I let him out about twenty yards (have only one shot and if I miss I will NEVER hear the end of it) and pop him in the shoulder, dead hog.

Moral of the story; they ain't dead 'til the gutpile is steaming.

#2: Don't trust someone else's shooting.

#3: Chances are you're safe if it charges your hunting partner.

Hey I think I've heard that story before! The guy who shot the pig was a friend of mine. He said you had a pretty close call!
