This crazy trip started yesterday as I decided to head out and scout for the elusive Chukar.  I headed out yesterday at 3 am and headed up in the Randsburg/Garlock are for some up to date scouting info.  Well after driving 75 miles of dirt roads I didn't see my first covey until 12:30 pm, this covey had about 20 birds, of course it's a day to early so they were nice enough to let me walk within 15 yds to take some pics.

So two more hours and I spot this bunch crawling out of a guzzler, this group had about 30 birds.  Look behind the second pole from the left.

So I figure since the birds really were'nt moving around until later we decided to go quail hunting off hiway 138 first thing this morning, this was a waste of time so we raced the 80 miles back to the Chukar spots.  We get there at 11:30 and start looking, by 12 noon we start walking and for 2 1/2 hrs we see nothingso we decide to start heading back to the truck and we spot 15 or so birds 100 yds from my truck.  We do the sneak and birds I could get to withing shooting distance yesterday wouldn't let us get close to them at all today.  The birds flush and land in the next zip code and after them we go,  we did find them just over a ridge and they flush between Whitey1(Stuart) and myself, Whitey1 gets one and my 20 ga over/under dropped a pair.  A long two days and a few birds to show for it.

Kid Creole, Isn't that how it works out, the day before hunting season you see a mess of birds and come opening day all gone. Sounds like you guys had a tough hunt. We went out for quail and did'nt even get a shot off. It was better than being at work.
How did everyone else do?

Kid-
I know that guzzler! Glad to hear you're seeing a few birds. 65 chukar or so isn't much for out there, but it's enough to keep you going. Makes me want to make the drive back down and do some chasing/hunting, and I may very well do so in a few weeks.

I hunted the Skeedaddles out of Susanville on the Nevada border on Saturday. Total of 450 mile round trip drive, 7-8 miles of walking, and heard one lone bird taunting me from high on the ridge, right at dark. Rolled home at 1 a.m., tired but all the more determined to find the Northstate chukar.

Nice job, and nice pics.

I might add those three Chuckar were mighty tasty last night. Stewed in Crok-pot with Golden Mushroom soup, a few carrots and potatoes smothered gravey over white rice. Yum Yum
